I have a problem with my pee.  I cannot hold it too long.  If I merely get the idea in my head that I might need to urinate, I must do so immediately.  I am taking pills that are supposed to help, but they don't.

Has anybody here got this problem?  What can be done about it?

Gerry, I suspect that many of us have had this symptom, but the cause of it can only be diagnosed by a visit to your doctor.  It could represent anything from a urinary tract infection to an enlarged prostate, or any one of a number of other causes.  Urinary urgency can certainly be a problem, and you should see your doctor, or possibly a urologist to determine the cause.

about "urgency". I HAVE seen my doctor and he gave me a prescription for TAMSULOSIN HCL TABS.  I take one every day.  They haven't helped.

By the way, I am an old fogie aged 84.

Has anyone any other suggestion?  I'd sure like to hear it.

Just my two cents: far as I can tell, the tamsulosin is used to help you urinate. Not to cut down on urgency.

For me, the BIG urgency problem is food/beverage that irritates the bladder. Things like coffee, tea, cola, chocolate, peppers, onions, etc. cause a LOT of urgency. Can't delay racing to the bathroom.

I eliminated all the "bladder irritants" from my diet, and the urgency has 99% disappeared.

Here's a list to get you started. Probably won't hurt to try eliminating them, and see if it helps.

I have recently experienced more urgency that I have for 6 months. My uro suggested that I go to two tamsulosin per day. They are supposed to help with both urinating as well as frequency. It seems to be helping.

I also suspect that I should be following Nutmeg's advice above. I do avoid the caffiene versions of tea/coffee/soda but drink the "non" versions. I also like spicy stuff and chocolate....a lot. If I get worse instead of better, I'll start cutting some of this stuff out.
