Question about PSA after TURP

Never heard of that one and will just say upfront that is not true. the only time I hae heard of needing to double psa is when you are on medication for BPH etc, avodart, finesturide

I really appreciate the responses. The article basically stated that a man that was diagnosed with PC after having a TURP should be treated more agressively because had he not had the TURP his PSA would have been higher since the TURP cuts out part of the gland (I think my husbands was about 40% removed) and lowers the PSA. The size before TURP was like 40 grams and now it is between 20-25 grams. It said this information should be factored when deciding the treatment plan along with gleason, DRE, PSA, etc. I hope I will never need this information but I was just curious after reading that. We should have the results any day. Does it usually take longer than a week? It's been 10 days and the waiting is so difficult.

Every place is different, mine was in within 48 hours. On the psa front, the " logic " seems to make sense in the article. However My "logic " and I beleive it to be valid is if the prostate is 40 % smaller it will put out less psa because..... the prostate is smaller, period. Have a talk with your doctor, and demand the results. It does not take that long for them to get the results. It just takes them that long to get them to you, cause ther'e Impawtant. Why are so many people afraid of these guys/ girls, they are working stiffs like the rest of us, we just elevate them for no good reason.

I had a turp back in Feb 2022 my PSA before the Turp ws 20.8. I was a gleason 6 and after the turp they raised me to 3=4=7. June 2 I went back in for a follow up PSA it came back at 3.4. My next appointment is Dec 2022. I had 3 bio'ss that where at negative before the turp.

I had a HoLEP, which is like a TURP but removes more tissue. This paper talks about how PSA tracking afterward has better predictive value. Any PSA rise is much more likely to be due to PCa, since there is less non cancerous tissue to confound the measurement.

My husband is still awaiting biopsy results from April 29. I just recently read online that the psa is understated after a TURP. It said that for treatment purposes the psa would be doubled. For example if the psa was 5, and you had a TURP performed the correct psa would be 10. Does anyone know if this is true? His pre biopsy info is PSA-10.44, DRE-abnormal, testosterone-214 and transrectal ultrasound showed area of "concern". TURP performed 9/2009 and biopsy came back negative at that time. Thanks much!

I had a Turp 5 1/2 yrs ago no rise or fall in psa from it. No other issues the blockage was removed and I was peeing like a 13 yr old boy again. It's wonderful they can do these procedures.

SPX, I guess it would determine on how much resection of the gland they take during the TURP. I asked my RO if I could have the seeds placed instead of IMRT. I saw several posts on this forum that suggested that triple play was the gold standard for tackling the cancer. Being high risk with a GL8 I wanted the best treatment I could get. He looked at my scan and said that my prostate after the TURP was not viable enough for the seed placement. My URO didn’t warn me of what could happen later on concerning treatments for cancer. It was probably a money thing for him as all he told me after was to watch and wait. So I did, until my new URO said you have been waiting too long and his biopsy resulted in the GL8. The fact that the RO took a look to see if I was a candidate for the seeds, leads me to believe that seeds can be placed if the TURP is done correctly. That is without slicing it to pieces. If you are thinking about having it or the laser done, ask questions of what can happen down the road. I agree that after the TURP I urinated like I was back in HS. My best to you.
