Good luck on the crazy road you will travel. You will get lot's of help, information and opinions here. I was very upset when I found out I had cancer, but the people here made me realize that I had time to breath and make a decision that I was comfortable with. I'm still in the process, but have seeds scheduled for mid August. I would think you have many options. I started out wanted seeds and my wife thought surgery was the best option. Please at the very least see a surgeon and a radiologist oncologist to get view on both sides. People her have strong feelings and preferences and it's good to hear both sides in this forum too. After the meeting with the surgeon my wife was 100% in favor of surgery. After meeting with radiologist oncologist she is on board with seeds, so your views can change as you go through this. The good news is you have choices. The bad news is you have choices. Best of luck what ever you decide.

My wife and I are going through a similar scenario to yours. I'm also waiting to "wake up". One positive is that with your husband's stats you have the time to research to find the best option available to you. You've received good advice so far and there is little that I can add other than recommend this site which I found helpful:

Hi, sorry to hear of your news.

I can only speak for myself as I had a similar diagnosis just over a year ago at about the same age.

First pray for Gods wisdom in this matter, then definately seek a second or third opinion.

I went with the surgery. Looking back I am glad because it is comforting to know that my removed prostate was on a pathologists examining table and studied to see just what I have going on. With the radiation I would always be wondering what is going on there (I tend to worry about things anyway).

As for the incontinentance, I am actually better off now than before, good solid stream and I am not always running to the bathroom as before surgery. ED is another issue that I am still working on.

I found a neat, simple book called "Prostate cancer for Dummys" real good information presented in a non freightening way.

Sorry to read about your husband diagnosis. I was also 54 when I was diagnosed. You allready have good advice but I'll throw in my two cents worth!

With a Gleason 6 as all ready mentioned check out Cyberknife. It is offered in the Knoxville area and there has been excellent results with Gleason 6's.

I Live near Cleveland TN and had a Gleason 7. I chose Robotic at Vanderbilt in Nashville. IF YOu go robotic go with EXPERIENCE!!!!!

There are two forms of brachytherapy: the permanent seeds implant and the temporary high dose rate HDR. The HDR is a more modern form that is more conformal to the cancer resulting in fewer side effects and better treatment. It does not leave anything in the body. Your husband looks like a good candidate for monotherapy.
