Saw this article in the San Francisco news, involved a guy that had prostate cancer surgery.  Every employer should be made to read this:

David, I agree the company got what it had coming and if more employers saw this maybe more of our PC brothers could come out of the closet.

Since he is getting his full pay for the next 7-8 years (the years he supposedly intended to work) do you think they should require him to go to the office?

I don't think that is how it works, Jeff. The company had their chance to do this man right, and chose not to.

I'd say that if they required him to go to the office, he would be under no obligation to behave in any particular way. I could make it unpleasant enough for the co-workers, without getting really serious, that they would ask me if I wouldn't mind staying at home devil

I would normally agree with "fair is fair," but they totally failed to be "fair" on the front end. This man had to jump through hoops and loops to get them to be "fair."

To ask him to go into work now seems a little to little and a little to late.

Besides, if he had to go into work, then technically there would be no real penalty to the company for their "dispicable conduct." Not to mention the potential hostile environment he would most likely have to deal with.

Just my unsolicited two cents... :)

I'm a free-enterprise type, but corporations like this give capitalists a bad name. This fellow was a sales manager that almost certainly made a great deal of money for the company over the years that he employed there. And this is how they treat him when he needs a little consideration? Shameful.

There hasn't been a lot of discussion on the forum about work-related issues, which definitely came into play for my husband when considering treatment choices and openness. He would not have been seen as 'able' to assume the position he had just been assigned to advance into, and it is hard to know exactly where it all would have gone.

This is an interesting story to me, and should serve as a warning, especially to private industry, to find ways to work with cancer patients. A great many posters on this forum are still employed, and there seems to be a trend in this country to retire at a later age.

What happens in cases like this? Could he even get insurance coverage with another employer, or would his cancer be a pre-existing condition? And what about private insurance? Will all that extra money go toward medical bills? I hope not.

After some research, I found a federal web site with some answers. www.dol.gov/ebsa/faqs/faq_consumer_hipaa.html There is some protection from pre-existing conditions when you change jobs, subject to some exceptions, etc.

My company was extremely supportive, they really couldn't have been better.

I'm a software developer and while the official company policy would be for me to go on disability, they told me to just take all the time I needed and I continued to receive full pay and benefits. I took off 6 weeks and because it overlapped the Christmas break my manager also told me I should take some extra time off in the summer to make up for the christmas break I spent recuperating. I didn't do that (it didn't feel right), but it was a nice gesture. They also lessened my workload for the winter so I didn't come back to a pile of work.
