Newby - Question on leakage with erections

Hi I'm glad I found this site. I was treated in February with a TURIS procedure which hollowed out the Prostate. I was originally diagnosed with severely enlarged BPH which backed up urine into my kidneys. Also partial nerve damage to bladder. Starting around June I had night time leakage and started wearing pads. I've come to conclude this happens when I'm asleep and have involuntary partial erections. My doctor says give it time, has put me on a pill to stimulate the bladder voiding and sees me in December. I was quite surprised yet releived to to others with the same condition and have been told it may take many months. I haven't tried to initiate sex for fear of leakage. Thanks for listening.

Hey I do want to thank you for bringing up TURIS. At first I thought, darn, this lucky guy got to go to SPAIN for his procedure -- until i looked it up and found it was "transurethral resection in saline - plasma vaporization of the prostate (TURIS-PVP)".

I don't know about you but having a plasma-arc welder stuck up my urethra/prostate sure makes me cringe!

How large was your prostate before the TURIS (estimated size ?). Since all your urethra and plumbing are intact I am sure it's just a matter of time for your incontinence and erection leakage to clear up. Just give it some time.

Not sure how large is was I'd have to go thru some of the labs. The diagnosis was originally discoered by my Creatinine level and symptoms of the enlarged prostate.

Most of the members in here have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and treated at some time. For men who have had their prostate removed what you describe is not uncommon.  We have no prostate and are left with an orgasm that does not include any ejaculate from the prostate or as we call a "dry orgasm". With having no prostate  we are also left with only 1 splincter to hold back urine from the bladder and during sex a urine leak can happen to most of us when that splincter can not hold back the flow. The healthy prostate has a 2nd splincter that connects between the bladder and the prostate that closes during ejaculation to send the ejaculate down the urethra and out the penis otherwise it could go into the bladder. I am not a doctor or an expert but my best guess is that your 2nd splincter was weakened during the TURIS  which is why the doctor told you it will improve over time as it heals.

Had urodynamic test 2 days ago. Whne pushing the catheter in, I went thru the roof. Seems like blockage is back....ugh.

Had the turis proceure again last week. Doc saw more blockage. Just got the cath out today, dealing with a few leaks now.

Well it's been several months now since the procedure and the focus seems to be on my bladder not voiding. No blockage just nerve damage and now I have to self cath 2x a day. The upside is the procedure makes plenty of room for the catheter and it's not too annoying. once and the morning and once at night I get 600 cc's out but on my ownI can only pass 100 at a time. I had a kidney scan with lasik and the kidneys are functioning ok, the trick now is to protect them from backups.

Fossil, it just makes sense to me that you also need to be cognitive of your liquid intake. If for some reason you take in more water than normal, I would self cath a second time midday and a third time at night before bed. One early evening the wife and I went to a movie and I had to go to the bathroom twice real bad. I had not taken in any extra water but my wife served me a large bowl of soup for lunch.

If there is nerve damage, many of use PC guys know very well that it takes 18-24 months for nerves to heal. In many PC cases, we take viagra for two years to keep the soft muscle tissue in the penis healthy while the nerves heal so we can still get an erection once they do mend. I mention this because the need to self cath may go away if related to the nerve damage you mention. BTW: I'm three months post op using 1 depend and 3-5 pads per day and taking 5mg of cialis nightly with zero night time erections. I only mention this so you realize than many of us are fighting personal battles ourselves and not to trivialize your situation. I truly hope you heal well, and I would hate to use a cath but would if I had to.

Yes, they do heal. Large nerves like we have in our backs and necks don't, but small nerve cells do repair themselves if the damage isn't too extensive. Go to Utube and look up Dr John Mulhall, or read his book "Saving your Sex Life". He talks about how the nerves that get damaged from a prostatectomy can heal up usually in 18-24 months. BTW: I'll be getting my first shot of trimix this monday which will give me my first erection since Jan 2nd. It is very common for guys using injectable ED meds to back off the dosage at 9-12 months as the nerves start to heal.

I also had a whomping large prostate (before diagnose for PCa). Never had a TURIS or TURP tho. It was pretty tough going and going and going all the time. While at a first meeting with my URO while setting up for a BIOPSY he only half jokingly said that he could always perform an RRP to cure the BHP once and for all. Lucky for me I eventually needed the RRP anyways. BUT, on the frequent urination side, life is so much better now with an I. P. Freely lifestyle, so for that part it was worth it. So, just wanted to let you know there is a more drastic remedy. Have no idea if insurance companies would pay for RRP for just lifelong urinary obstruction conditions. I do know those disposable catheter costs can add up. Maybe make an appealing argument there to any stonewalling insurance examiner.

Latest CT scan confirms ultrasound results of cysts in kidneys and lo and behold arthritis in spine. As for the catherization, it's been 4x a day with output of 400 cc each time. Anything over that I'm able to void on my own but always feel the urge at 400. Doc will keep an eye on the cysts and repreat scans in December. Makes me wonder just how enlarged the prostate was and not just nerve damage to bladder.

The latest. It's been 8 months now since the procedure, still cathing but lo and behold my erection has returned. All is not lost! LOL

Seems like more nerves are returning in the bladder. Now I feel the urge more often and void 200-300 cc's each time 5 or 6 times a day

Well to add insult I've just been diagnosed with Parkinsons. Dealing with the meds and muscle pain right now. No more bladder leaks but I still have to use the cath to void.

The latest...went for urodynamic test last week. Don't see the need for it since I can't void on my own without a cath. My PSA was 1.4 also. See the doc next week.

And now this.......during the treatment of my prostate condition bi yearly ultrasounds had shown kidney cysts, that in itself is nothing unusual. However the last scan and CT showed a mass on my right kidney and growing. I'll be having it removed roboticly next month. I'd been complaining for a few years now about pain on my side and got no answer.....

Had the mass removed April 8th. Slow recovery but cancer is gone!
