Catheter out yea!...NOT

What did they tell you at the hospital?  Was it a bladder spasm?  A stricture? 

It made me sweat a bit to read your account, but hopefully all will be well after you spend a little more time with the catheter.  I'm sorry you had to go through this.

I am hoping you are ok, doing better and that you will update us when you learn what this was about.

Thanks for the feedback, yes my surgeon has been notified, i will see him in two day's, he has started me on antibiotic , i will see him on Friday morning and we will see how it goes
when they removed my cath the first time, they did not pump in fluid and do a test, they just yanked it out and believe it or not the nurse said to me and my wife
you can go home and have sex now, i didn't worry to much about it, i went home and peed ok one time, then, look out the next time i went to pee
i felt a level of pain inside that i never knew existed something from the seventh circle of hell.

When they took my catheter out they back flushed it with dye and took x-rays of my bladder before they would take it out. I hope you get better make sure they give you the best care.

I had a very similar experience. Catheter removed, peed OK in the office, peed at home, went to bed, got up in the night...and pee would not come out. I called my hospital, and while we were talking I became more and more uncomfortable, so they told me to come in. On the drive there the pain kept going up and up and up. Even though it was maybe 3 am and very quiet out, the pain made it seem like there was loud noise all the time.

They put in another catheter, causing relief in seconds. Kept in in another week. They said it could have been a flap of tissue, or maybe inflammation. So the next time I went in for removal, they had me take ibuprofen ahead of time. They also did that X-ray you mention--cystogram?--where then inject fluid into the bladder and xray to look for leaks. Not a very pleasant test, but bearable. Anyway, after the second one came out, I was OK. Maybe needed to leave it in a bit longer the first time. You never know.

My stories of surviving 21 catheters would scare the bee-gee-bee's out of most new comers here, lol. My original catheter was in for 30 days, not the usual 7-10 days. It was taken out, and in just a few hours, had to rush back to uro's office, and painfully have another one put in. In less than 6 hours, was totally blocked again. The uro's office was closed, and had to local ER, and they acted like they never had seen a catheter before. It was an ordeal from hell. In the end the original purpose of the cath was in place for 63 days. That was just the beginning, to make a long story short, ended up needing 6 corrective surgeries because of strictures at the bladder neck, and then 51 weeks straight with suprapubic catheters because of my bladder being destroyed by salvage radiaton. Spent a total of 1 1/2 years on the caths, finally ended up with my bladder being by-passed for life, and now pee into a plastic bag via a stoma (hole in my side) as the result of an Urostomy.

The med to help best for bladder spasms was Ditropan. Cheap and easy to get. I lived off of that stuff for nearly 2 years.

Hope your story has an easier ending.

For some men, this kind of trouble seems to be a one or two time event, then they get it straigthened out for good, thanks goodness. For some 2-4% of men, strictures and blockages can be a chronic condition.

Ya...the good old days. Had my cath in for five weeks.. After the fourth cystogram looked good the cath was removed.

Can't imagine having one put in while being awake... Guess it has to be better then the pain from not being able to pee.

Jaxum - ask your uro about doing a cystogram. They "only" cost about $750 as I recall but are covered by insurance

Yeah I too had cystomgram befoire cath removal top check there were no leaks. Also had to hang around in hospitla afgter cath came out till I could pee.

I'm not sure what good taking antibiotics will do at this stage as I was told I had to wait till the cath was out before starting ABs

Also sounds bizarre that the nurse said "go home and have sex": sounds like she had no idea what your surgery had been for and that it had involved sewing up the actual urethra where the cath had been.

When my snake was exercised from me my URO told me to stay away from anything sexually stimulating and avoid an erection until week 3. Looking back, I think he told me that to give me some optimism and self esteem about the expected ED problems. Until I started Trimix there was no way even if the most beautiful woman in the world (other than my wife) had approached me fully naked would she have gotten a rise from me.

Having been awake for two catheter insertions, in my experience it's really easier coming in than going out. Though, going out isn't so bad either.
