It wasn't from prostate cancer, but it was from cancer nonetheless. Steve Jobs died today, and I feel really sad . . .

Such a young age. He was a genius that changed all our lives.

A cool guy who made something as geeky as a computer a cool thing, and then everything beginning with i..... changed the way we work and play. RIP

Jobs once said "The knowlege that you're going to die one day soon is your most valuable tool when it comes to decision making."

When I heard of his death yesterday, I thought about the cancer and his age - only 56, and then thought about another famous person, Patrick Swayze - also dying of cancer at 57, both so sad.

Then I immediately had a thought about when personal computers were first mentioned in the news, more as an interesting oddity. When asked what they could do, the popular response was that they could store recipes. That's all the marketing guys could come up with at the time.

Who knew how prolific he would be and the contribution he would make to technology?

Very Sad Day. His vision with technology and how it integrated within our lives will be missed!! Sadly the world will be effected by our lose of him where I truly beleive he was just getting started.

Jobs was told he was cured. Jobs, even in this clip uses the word "cure". As selfish as it might be, that is what hit me the hardest when listening to this again. I think he thought he was out of the woods. He way much too young.

A couple of years ago, at an office celebration to honor enormous achievement by a division of my staff, I played the Stanford Speech to challenge my employees to be sure they were doing what they liked, and to realize they had the right to take charge of their own lives. It was a moving moment . . . several later told me they continued to remember Steve's words and challenge.

. . . still sad, but getting better as time to reflect begins to take hold.

Steve Jobs gave us things we did not even know that we needed and those things became the normal of out lives.

Powerful legacy for anyone. A visionary who touched so many lives.

He was also abandoned as a child and put up for adoption. Everyone makes mistakes and I don't think his personal life has much to do with his contributions to society. It's hard to argue that he hasn't shaped society immensely with his ideas. That's his appeal.

Jobs was a great inventor. As for his personal life, we shouldn't speak ill of the dead. He had a life filled with many challenges, starting off by being adopted. Bill Gates actually has a lot more money than Jobs did, and is using it, intelligently, to make a difference in human health around the world. Bill Gates grew up in a wonderful home, with his parents being icons of community service in Seattle. Other than his friend, Warren Buffet, who supports the Gates foundation, no other billionaire is doing anything comparable to Gates.

Being rich and in control doesn't necessarily translate into better health care. He delayed surgical treatment for his insulinoma for 9 months pursuing alternative treatment (Dean Ornish is a friend of his). The tumor must have been significant in size, because he had a horrendous operation to remove the pancreas (Whipple procedure, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pancreaticoduodenectomy), which makes a prostatectomy seem like a walk in the park. Most patients with insulinoma have small lesions and can do very well with surgery. When his tumor recurred in 2009 in the liver, he had a liver transplant. The article makes a big deal about liver transplant being a poor treatment for metastatic cancer, because the immunosuppressant drugs that one takes afterwards may promote cancer growth, and the article suggests that the mets should have just been removed surgically. Jobs had the best doctors at Stanford, and I suspect that his mets were actually in a location where they couldn't be surgically treated. In any case, he had the money and influence to get a liver transplant in Memphis. Perhaps this gave him a little more time. He clearly lived through years of misery from his disease, and his treatment choices didn't work out too well.
