The guy was a genius- contributed immensely to advancement of the information era- made a fortune- but was a self-centered jerk- total

a-hole according to those who knew him.

- a more gentler approach would be - from a recent online magazine quote - "he did not suffer fools .."

The first move that Jobs made when he returned to Apple was end all philanthropic programs the company had. These are the guy. Smart? Yes. Shrewd? Yes. Charitable? No.

now wait a second, Tony.  he backdated his own stock options and thereby pocketed billions.  pretty generous act cool .  yeah as a person i've never cared for jobs but he was a genius.  the saying that describes him best is "Steve Jobs knew what you wanted before you did".

i always hated buying records or CDs only to find 1-2 good songs. I actually wished I could select only songs I liked. Then came iTunes.

It just dawned on me that Steve was born on exactly the same day I was.... My mother didn't think it was funny when I told her she gave the wrong twin away.

Steve Jobs dad was Arab. A Syrian casino manager who made a boatload of money himself. He got an evangelical girl in the US pregnant and there was no way she or her family would allow them to stay together. thus Jobs was put up for adoption. His biological dad had little idea what was going on. He reached out to Jobs two months ago, apparently not for money given his own wealth, but Jobs didn't even acknowledge it.

Nonetheless, he paid for his sins with years of intense suffering from his disease. Save your criticisms for the living. There are plenty of rich guys who are doing nothing with their money to pay back society for their good fortune. Let's go picket in front of their mansions.

I don't use many Apple devices either (except for an ipod)...However, if you're typing on a Windows-based computer, Steve Jobs is partly responsible.

The Macintosh was introduced in 1984.  Jobs was the first to see how the mouse and the graphical user interface could change people's computing experience.  We would not be typing on this forum on a Windows machine today without what took place.  Without him, the PC (the good PC), revolution may not have happened..and assuming it did--who knows how it would have turned out.

It took ten years for Microsoft to copy the mouse and the graphical user interface from the Mac. Apple also introduced laserprinters, and multiple fonts to computers. Lots of things on your Windows computers--the appearance of the menu bars and icons, the ability to write long names for files, the way the file lists are organized in the windows, the way graphics are handled and displayed, the plug and play features, etc, are direct knock offs of the Mac, often moving to Windows 5 or 10 years after they were on the Mac. Even now, the MacOS X is more stable, faster, and slicker than Windows 7. Of course, the majority of touch screen devices (iPhones, iPads) are actually made and sold by Apple, although it is only a matter of time before most of these devices run a knockoff, the Google Android operating system.

Who can say whether without Jobs we'd be still working with the DOS command prompt, with lines of text on a green screen?

Jobs actually became a billionaire from Pixar, and didn't own a majority of Apple stock. Gates' passion was for the business and making money, and he made much more of it. Jobs's passion was for the devices he made. Gates was much more successful, more quickly, and is devoted nearly all his energy to his foundation. Jobs really wasn't truly successful till the last 10 years, and never did any payback. Maybe if he lived another 20 years, he might have grown up some more and changed direction in his life.

I still remember the time when you would read DICK TRACY comics and fantasize about his two-way picture watch - and now that is common place

- what was fantasy and science fiction is now part of science fact - that is what we must encourage and cultivate in our children and young adults so they reach for the stars and beyond, think outside the box on how and why cancers exist and plot their destruction and elimination whether it be by nano-robots, radio waves, microwaves or elements not even discovered as of yet ....

-yes, I am rambling.... was looking up on google traces of any of Jobs' philanthropic nature and stumbled on his latest venture - the Siri version of his iphone - www.apple.com/iphone/features/siri.html - this is not a plug for the product - but to take it way outside the box....
just imagine a surgeon/oncologist tracing the route of his/her nano-robots trackling down bone mets, speaking controls and having it respond - and blasting away the mets without harming good bone and tissue - ... it is possible... just dream and make it happen ...

that's right.  you know i think jobs tried.  we we're talking about him last night and my buddy was saying at one time jobs was a student of eastern philosophy.  the guy was dumped by his parents and in fact didn't claim his first child for years so maybe his inauspicious beginning really messed him up.
