Tomorrow at my sons private school (K-12) they are having Breast Cancer awareness day and have asked all the students and faculty to wear pink tomorrow. Our 10 year old son is planning on wearing a baby blue shirt to bring awareness to his school about Prostate Cancer. I asked him what he was going to say when he is asked why blue and not pink, he responded with "I am going to tell them its for my Dad and his fight against prostate cancer" Isn't that just awesome!!!! I am so proud, I had to share. So keep my son in your thoughts tomorrow as he is standing up for Prostate Cancer.

What a great 10-year-old!  He's a brave and smart young man.  You and your husband have every right to be very proud of him.

Susan and family - you should be proud of your son standing up for Prostate Cancer Awareness - and you should be also proud of yourself for raising such a gutsy kid.

Very nice reading Susan R, tell your son we are all proud. I just had surgery and let him know he is helping us other PCa survivors move forward in the fight. This also sparked an idea that maybe we all could help the fight against PCa by asking our employers to have a light blue shirt day.

My fellow PCa brothers and GFMPH members;

I hereby officially proclaim Susan's son to be a great son, natural leader and defender of the PCa Brotherhood.

In honor of this, I recommend that we make him an Honorary Member of GFMPH and I will mail him the new GFMPH Logo hat.

That is great Susan and you have every right to be proud. It might be easy to forget what impact PCa has on a 10 year old, so this is a great way for him to express himself.

I received and email from Sonny, which prompted me to come on here and see if anyone responded, and you have all brought tears to my eyes today, knowing that you are all behind my little guy and knowing he is making such a HUGE statement today. I am a very proud Mama today, and so glad to be able to share it with you all, since you understand the true meaning of it. We keep you all in our prayers and hope for a medical breakthrough!!!

My 8-year-old grandson attends a Catholic elementary school (3rd grade). His everyday uniform is a light blue shirt and dark blue pants, so he's wearing "the colors" everyday. I'm sure that's never occurred to him, but I think I'll clue him in so he realizes there's some symbolism involved.

Susan, I hope you'll let us know how your son's blue attire was received at his school.

OK my son returned from school. I asked him what people said about his blue shirt. "Mrs. K (the science teacher) told me I needed to have on pink, I told her it was for Prostate cancer and she told me NO, that is a different time of year!"
Kind of pisses me off that a teacher would be so negative about it.

I am still proud of my little man!

Susan, if I were in your place, I would be on the phone with that teacher and/or the principal ASAP.  How incredibly insensitive of her.

Inform the teacher that during the blue month (September) NPR did a news spot on Breast Cancer. Some teachers can be very insensitive. Your son is a hero in many of our eyes!

If the right news editor heard about this, it would make a great human interest story: the son of a prostate cancer survivor honors his Dad by wearing blue, only to be told that it's the wrong color. Insensitive is really too nice a term. The teacher doesn't seem to have shown any understanding at all of what's going on in this boys mind.

Not knowing the teacher I wont say anything more than she could have handled this a lot better. She failed to understand the importance of "blue" to your son. Doing what you think is right wont always get you a pat on the back, but it makes living in your own skin much easier.
