Had to come home from work due to soreness pain above the belly where the prostate was removed.After four weeks should I be having this pain? I haven't been lifting anything heavy but have been doing alot of driving, walking,and bending. I did make an appointment with the urologist office for tomorrow but this will bother me until then, so I figure I would ask for some thoughts here.

I was released by my URO to do anything I could after 3 weeks. However I had some sharp pains off and on in that same area when I bent over or got tired for a couple of months, I think this was still part of the healing process. Even at 4 months the scar above my belly button is a little tender like when my dog jumps in my lap and stands on the scar.

I am sure it is nothing to worry about,

Thanks WaterGuy, I'm sounding like a wuss but I was worried if it was a hernia.

I would still talk to your URO as it is not uncommon to have hernias after RALP

I think if you do a search on hernias in this forum you will find some thread and more information on the subject.

Lifting and bending can hurt. I was released to actually go back into the office at 7 weeks, but I leaked too badly to do that.

I was on a 5 pound lift limit for almost 3 months.

Pain is nature's way of telling you that you did something wrong. Take it easy today and go talk to the doc.

cmetalman: yes, hernias DO occur (been there, done that).  the way i think of it, as they pull the muscle layers back together to sew things up, if you have a weak spot, it will get weaker.  i had already had hernias on both sides, and a recurrence followed on one side after my open RP...so i've played that game 3 times now...just another one of those possible side effects, what can you do ? went to surgeon, and he said, yup, you got it again...hopefully this will be the end of it...don't put up with it too long, cuz it's not likely to fix itself

Sorry you are having pain, I agree seeing your Doc is probably the only thing that will calm you, and this may just be the mom side of me but.....have you considered all the standard stomach pain stuff? Could you have eaten something bad? Might you just have a gas bubble? Maybe while you were sleeping you turned or stretched wrong and it pulled a muscle. Scar tissue. Is it a sharp or dull pain? Are you feeling nausea? Check off all the things it couldn't be, and that might lead to what it may be.

Hope you feel better and it is nothing serious. Keep us informed

Susan R , thanks this pain is isolated right in the area where they took out my prostate. I know I've been doing alot of walking and pounding the streets. I'm HOPING its just from this and nothing more.It is also sensitive to the touch.

I'm 10 months out from surgery and if I overdo things still get aches and pains in the abdomen area.
I spent last weekend laying a patio, (with some help) and suffered for it afterwards.

I'm sure it's nothing to be too concerned about.

So today I saw the uro and his assistant and they determined there was no hernia forming. YES! Big relief, lost sleep over this. Pain had lessened today, they're thinking it's part healing, part exertion, and maybe scar tissue. They are otherwise really pleased with my progress, advised to stop 5mg Cialis daily and move onto 20mg as needed so I can go forth and get busy...or give it the best shot I can at this point.

Thanks for your posts, everyone, it really did help to ease my mind and please know that your support is greatly appreciated.

I told you not to worry about the pains. Yesterday I moved around several of my heavy 65# water machines and last night I paid the price. The area around my scar hurt every time I bent over, but the pains are gone today.

If the ED drugs do not do the trick give me a call and we can discuss injections. They are working great for me and with none of the drugs side effects. smilewinkgrin

I have had a number of aches around my navel, had things checkled by uro quite soon who prodded me gemntly to check if there was any kind of hernia etc.
I find that sitting still for a long time can still make it ache: when driving you sit a lot stiller than in a normal chair. Walking helps as does gently stretching into a very upright position. A freind who had open surgery couldn't stand up straight for over a year without it aching.
I think these achesa rea good indication that while it's keyhole surgery in terms of what you see on the outside there is still a great deal of "damage done to your insides that needs longer than you think to heal completely.

I was soooooooo worried that I had a hernia instead I get Cialis20mg and told to go home and do the horizontal dance...Wish me luck!

WaterGuy,how long since surgery did you wait till you started lifting heavy water machines? We use hand held grinders/polishers for hours on and I haven't done that yet. I wasn't sure if it was too soon.

My URO cleared me to do and lift anything I wanted week 3, but I wasn't comfortable until about a month after trying to lift my water machines. smhair

Your body went through a lot. Sometimes pain is just the bodies way of telling you to take it a bit easier. Glad you had it checked out with a doctor. I hope you feel better.
