Urination Pain - advise please

Nine months ago I had external beam radiation treatment for 5 weeks and then paladium seeds inserted. I have always had some mild irritation urinating when I don't drink enough water. I drink 2-liters of water a day.

In the last week, the pain has got significantly worse and the flow has gotten weak to sporatic. After talking to my urologist, the plan is to self cath once a day to try to open up the urethra. He prescribed urabell (sp ?) for pain in the urethra, but now my pharmacist tells me it's not available.

I have been taking 400 mg of Advil 3 times a day and for the last day otc AVO to try to lessen the irritation, but to not much effect.

Has anyone had similar experience and/or some ideas to decrease the pain when urinating?

Would really appreciate any HELP with this!

i have extensive experience with blockages and strictures, having spent about 1 1/2 years total time on 21 different catheters.

if there is burning pain, ask for pyridium, it really eases it, and its a cheap generic.
if you think you are having bladder spasms related to what you described, ask for ditropan, also a generic.

not every one is suitable for self-cathing, its an acquired skill. i was never allowed to by my uro, as there was too much risk of damaging myself.

sounds to me, if you are needing to self cath, then why doesnt your doctor "scope" you, and dialate your urethra and/or bladder neck to see if it can be enlarged or cleared. i had that done several times.

if there is a more serious stricture, you can be put under (day surgery) and your surgeon can go up there, and open up things, or dialate without any pain to you, sometimes they will use a laser, sometimes a blade, and sometimes larger sized dialation rods.

if you have to go any of those routes, its common to have another catheter in place for 3-10 days to give things a chance to calm down and heal.

don't let things get too far out of hand, you don't want to be in an ER type of situation with a total blockage. been there, done that, wouldn't wish that on anyone.

David is the acknowledged "expert" on strictures and catheters - I think he covered it.

Get it dealt with as soon as possible, lest you be at the ER at 4am.

Thanks for the advice, I have an appointment for a scope procedure on the 20th. I did one visit to an ER at 3 AM for a blocked urethra and unfortunately they did not help any at the local hospital so I had to travel an additional 80 miles to the regional hospital to have the on call urologist do the cath.

I wonder if Flomax would help? I had seeds implanted in August and was put on Flomax. I had to increase my Flomax from .4 to .8 when I had a hernia repaired and had pain and trouble peeing. It really helped. I only needed to do so for a couple of weeks. Best bet though is to get with your urologist ASAP.

I started flomax after about 3 weeks of external radiation.  It helped tremendeously with the pain and weak stream and did take Tylenol after radiation to deal with some of the urination symptoms that I had.  Now on nothing.

Sounds like having the scope done is in the right direction
