I'm posting this here as I know some of my UsTOO members watch this site. I put out the meeting notices but I thought I'd mention it here. If any HW members have questions you can post them here and I'll try to get them answered...

UsTOO Las Vegas Meeting Notice for Thursday January 19, 2012

Well known prostate cancer pathologist, Dr. Jonathan Oppenheimer will be our guest speaker this month. This is a real treat to be able to get a close up look at how we are diagnosed and given a stage and grade of the disease. Dr. Oppenheimer will be speaking about the changing face of prostate cancer diagnosis and also will show us the art of pathology. Please come and join us for a great session.

The meeting as usual will held at the Nevada Cancer Institute at One Breakthrough Way, Las Vegas Nevada. The meeting is held in the first floor lecture auditorium. See you there...

Tony, sorry I can't make it to this month's meeting, but it appears you will have an excellent topic/speaker planned given the paradigm shift taking place now in the management of low risk PC.

I would really appreciate it if you could publish some meeting notes here (in this thread, or perhaps another thread with another subject line might be more appropriate) after the meeting...I'm sure others would, too.

This is something that I am very interested in and I remember that Casey has posted about this in the past. I am hearing some chatter… that at least one significant position paper is about to be published that is going to support the reclassification of prostate cancer pathology.  The most interesting topic to me is usage of non-cancerous language to describe a pathology that is currently considered a prostate cancer.  Perhaps you may be able to ask about this.

Just a follow up.

Dr. Oppenheimer provided a basic overview on how to look at slides and how Gleason is determined. This was helpful to me as I have seen hundreds of images of core samples and seldom guessed right on Gleason grade. I am a smarter man since the "art" is not as much a mystery.

Dr. O. feels that we can get better information by being more public about pathology. He pointed out his websites for posting slide images. He has developed a "scoring" system to help patients identify if they are properly eligible for AS.

We went over many things about the pathology reports, and he pointed out that more tests are available to determine aggressiveness.
