Fortunately I do not have prostate problems,,,but I am having problem with ED. After trying the pills (all3) and trimix injections, still fail to have adequate results. Actually the prostiglandin in trimix is painful to the point of distraction. Am checking into the possibility of bimix. However, I've just made a connection between my ED and the Blood Pressure meds I'm taking. Urologist never asked about the BP meds. Now I suspect the Atenolol is causing the ED,,,and probably causing the oral pills to be less effective. Anyone have any experiences with high BP and ED?

Welcome to the site... You really need to talk to your URO.

And you should always tell all doctors about ANY medication you're taking.

Yup - almost all of the BP meds out there have an ED warning attached. I use to take atenolol daily and it did lower my libido a bit along with a bunch of other side effects. I've done some life style changes, diet and exercise, that have reduced my BP enough that I was able to switch from the beta blocker and that helped a lot.

I am surprised that a Uro treating ED wouldn't ask about BP meds. I'd have another conversation with you doctor because I suspect that atenolol would change your ED protocol.

sojen,  InTheShop is right.  Most BP meds can cause ED problems and there is not much you can do about it.  The BP drugs with the fewest side effects are diuretics such as generic Maxide or Spironolactone.  Check with your doctor if you haven't tried a diuretic.  The ConsumersReports site has a good review of all the BP meds.  Here is the link, (no registration required): http://www.consumerreports.org/health/best-buy-drugs/high-blood-pressure.htm.

Let's not put all the blame on the BP drugs:

Here's a snippet from WebMD article on HBP and ED:

High blood pressure is a major cause of erection problems. A study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that about 49% of men ages 40 to 79 with high blood pressure had erectile dysfunction. said...

I'd like to also add that the other 51% are lying ... ;-)

Why can't we have a category under "Diseases and Conditions" devoted to Erectile Dysfunction,,,,,it IS a condition,,,and a very common one, with many aspects to be discussed

While drugs may affect people differently, I've been taking Atenolol (among others) for many years, with no ED until I got my prostate cut out, and even that is not profound/recovering; And I still take Atenolol.

Is your blood pressure actually adequately controlled by the medications you are taking? Having it still be high is very likely to cause ED problems.

How is your fitness? If you'd like to get your game in the sack back, you can do a lot worse than more exercise (check with your doctor if you are in terrible shape so you don't overdo to start) and weight loss - and that can also help you get to lower doses or even entirely off blood pressure medications.

Simply walking 3-6 miles per day 5-7 days per week can make a big difference, if you walk at least 3 miles per hour (or a "20 minute or less" mile.) It can help even if weight loss is not significant (fitness matters more than absolute poundage or BMI, though improving BMI is also a very good idea if you can manage it.)

I've put 5-600 miles on my walking shoes in the past 6 months. My BMI still sucks (eating better is harder than walking more, for me anyway), but my BP has improved to the point that my doctor and I are experimenting with getting me off (or at least dosage down) of one of my BP meds.

I know my ED problems started about the time I started taking Atenolol (8-10 years ago). I have been taking Cialis 5 mg daily dose for the past 30 days,,,,I can say unequivocally that THAT has helped my BP AND MY urinary (BPH) MUCH more than BP meds OR Flomax!!! Now I'm reading about a BP med that is also prescribed for BPH,,,called Cardura. I have appointment with Uro AND Cardio soon and will discuss more with them.

I took cardura for awhile and it worked for my BP. I switched off of it a few years ago when my BP started failing for other reasons - at one point I was taking atenolol, cardura and HCT. It was a bad time in my life. Then I did some stress reduction, diet changes and a mild exercise program (30 minute walk 4-6 days a week). After a couple of years of that plan I started to drop the meds one at a time until final I switched off the atenolol completely to lorstan. I did ask about going back on cardura but cardio at the time didn't think it was right for me.

Cardura is certainly a good drug to ask about.
