Aspirin and cancer, could it really be this simple?

Just picked this up off Yahoo News.  Interesting, but finding it hard to believe that a low dose aspirin could do so much in regards to cancer.  I remain neutral.

My doc has been trying to get me to do the aspirin a day to reduce my heart and stroke risks but the aspirin aggravates my gout so I usually end up having to quit taking it.

so I won't be in the study to prove or disprove...

The aspirin would have burned open my ulcers, so I would have died of something other than PCa before metastasis.

Both Ron and I take one baby asprin every day.  For pennies a day, I figure it's worth it - you just never know.

Prostate Cancer isn't on the list of cancers that "might" benefit from aspirins.

Actually it is on the list Steve. I'll probably be adding it to my daily mountain of meds and supps. I'll throw as many Hail Mary passes as the clock allows.

I've been taking a aspirin a day ever since they did the heart attack study (must have been late '80s or early '90s) - and still got PCa. Sigh! btw, my heart is in great shape.

Yup, me to, been taking a baby aspirin for over 10 yrs, have a great heart but also got PCA :-(

As I noted above I’ve been taking (baby) aspirins everyday for over 7 years. It sure didn't help me any. One thing that did change, is that my skin has gotten even thinner than before diagnosed. I'm sure it's all the medications I'm taking now, but every time I bump something I start bleeding and it's hard to stop.  I've got tiny cuts all over my arms and legs now. Before the PCa I used Neosporin as a good first aid cream and have most of my life. Lately the little cuts would turn into big rashes and I'd use more Neosporin.  I finally went to a dermatologist and one look at the rash and he said I was now allergic to the Neosporin! Go figure. Maybe a little off subject, but started with aspirins. Bert

My favorite search engine lists the Top 5 searches each day. Today Aspirin Vs Cancer is number 1 on the list.

So I clicked on a few of the links and found some of the details from the 3 studies that were released this week. The thing that got my attention was not that aspirin was that great at keeping PCa at bay but the stats of developing mets while taking aspirin.

"Aspirin use reduced the risk for cancer with distant metastasis (hazard ratio [HR] for all cancers, 0.64; P = .001). The risk for cancer with distant metastasis was reduced by 36%, and the risk for adencarcioma was reduced by 46% (P = .0007). Among patients with adenocarcinoma who did not have metastasis at their initial diagnosis and who remained on trial treatment up to or after diagnosis, the use of aspirin reduced the risk for metastasis on subsequent follow-up by about 70%."

Thought that was worth sharing.

I heard this too, but also that they were still trying to develop a different type of aspirin to help with cancer.

I'm not a person that takes aspirin, nor do many members of my family as lots of us get nose bleeds etc.
and right now I'd be worries that aspirin would aggravate the lining of my post-RT bowel.

As for thmngs that we have taken etc that are supposed to have helped prevent disease, cancer etc, adn have falied. I always think in terms of the idea that if they do help, then despite the fact that we have ended up with cancer, perhaps thanks to the aspirtin or the diet or supplemnets etc we have merely ended up with a slightly less bad situation than we would optherweise haev had eg a Gleason 6 instead of a Gleason 8, or that we were diagnosed at 55 instead of 45 etc. Or may be we'll survvie longer after diagnosis (I am reminded of the fact that my dad was a non-smoker and his brother was a smoker and they had similar jobs, yet they both had heart attacks in their sixties, however, my dad lived for about another 30 years while my uncle's heart attack killed him the same day.)

I remember reading on this board about 8 months ago where the VA did a study that found that advanced PC patients that were on an aspirin regimen had a mortality rate of only 50% of those not taking aspirin...

So there must be SOMETHING to it....

I have been taking a low-dose (81 mg) aspirin daily since 1998, under supervision of my cardiologist. Aspirin reduces inflammation in the blood vessels, and thus helps to lessen deposits of cholesterol in the arteries. Inflammation promotes angiogenesis, as pointed out by Dr. Servan-Schreiber in his AntiCancer book. Aspirin, being anti-inflammatory, thus promotes anti-angiogenesis, which is why I believe aspirin helps to lower risk of metastasis.

Interestingly, at my recent checkup with my cardiologist 2 weeks ago, she stated that an ideal dosage of aspirin would be 30 mg daily, but since that dose is not available, I should continue taking the 81 mg tablet daily, the coated variety.

With an aneurysm in the brain, I am forbidden to take any kind of anti-inflammatory meds for longer than 2 days.
Those meds would help my knees out so much.

In a 2008 issue of the journal Cancer, researchers reported that men who used aspirin and other NSAIDs regularly had about 10 percent lower levels of prostate-specific antigens. The researchers suggest this may hinder the detection of prostate cancer in regular aspirin users.
