personal responsibility

Hello, everyone
For the last five years I have been a member of this community. I have shared my triumphs and my setbacks. I have laughed and I have cried. I have cheered at the victories of my friends and have tried to be there when things didn't turn out as we had hoped they would. This post may be construed by some to be out of line, callous, and coldhearted. I can assure everyone that it is meant to be nothing of the kind. Please do not judge me too harshly for the following. It is meant to be constructive and not degrading.
Men come here to this place seeking help and information during the most difficult and dire of situations. They have been diagnosed with cancer and the world as they know it is falling down around them. I have seen a great deal of compassion from the men and women at this site. I have also witnessed men giving excellent advise to the newbees who find us and chime in. For that I say Kudos to each of you.
Each of us needs to realize that we also lead by our example. We each make our treatment choices we each live with the consequences but we are all leaders and looked to as such by those who are new to PCA. Prostate cancer is different for each of us. We all have our fears and our treatment preferences. We all must ultimately choose our own path. Prostate cancer does have a few guidelines. The most important is that it is a hormonal cancer and feeds on testosterone. No matter who the expert is he will tell you the same thing. Prostate Cancer always responds for a while on hormone therapy. Sometimes it responds for a long time. In cases of advanced disease h.t. is the go to treatment. Because it works. It has the least amount of side effects and provides the best quality of life. If I told the men here that my doctor had me on an egg yoke diet and daily peanut butter enemas to fight this disease all of you would call it for what it is. Horse poop. What about some new guy. He sees veteran status and 6 year survivor and he is out buying an enema bag and a case of Skippy.
We have a personal responsibility when we post. We need to look behind us once in a while and see who is following us. It is okay to decide for ourselves what is best. Let us all be careful lest we lead others away from proven therapeutic options due to our own fear, or personal convictions. Thank you Todd

ha ha!  it would be incumbent upon me to point out that a turkey baster would be superior to an enema bag .  there's a fine line between being supportive and cosigning a bogus check.

Thanks for the info on the HRPCA web site. I will try it.

I do use the prostatepointers site (RP and PACI wiki) and really enjoy and learn from the focused questions and answers.

I take personal responsibility.  I will continue to do what I have done since joining this community. 

As I read here, I write down new treatments and will take them to my Urologist.  I listen to him, then say "I hear you, but I've heard alot about Peanut butter and Egg Yolks, what about them?".  I hired him (after interviewing several doctors), because I trust him, his knowledge and experience and I let him guide me.

Right now I am dealing with handling the side effects,  If I feel at some point that he is no longer helping me, I would seek a new doctor.  I trust you guys, and find much of the chatter helpful, insightful, and often inspiring, but  I (with the help of the professional that I hired) have to take responsibility of separating the wheat from the chaff.

Even though I was kidding around, I didn't miss Todd's point.  I am still digesting all that he wrote and thinking about it.

What didn't require much thinking (and digesting) was the peanut butter and eggs.

I can tell you that I take humor very serious.

we already do a great job as a group, in weeding out the snake oil peddlers, the out and out fakes, and the scamers.

best way to help new folks, is for the seasoned ones here, not to be pushy in their own personal opinions, whether its about diet, a particular treatment choice, etc. don't be dogmatic in your views

none of us are experts, or medical professionals, so why pretend to be so in our posts?

we are a support group. patient to patient. we share our experiences and the knowledge we have learned along the way with others, but that does not replace sound medical advice

we should never tell someone what they should or shouldnt do, we dont know all the circumstances or medical history of a person

and most of all, we should learn to live and let live. life is too short to get into ego wars or knoweldge wars, etc. that will scare off a new person here in a heartbeat. and with that, comes learning the diplomatic art of agreeing to disagree, without being an ass about it.

Todd, there is no possible way that was directed to you. You took that one word out of context, it was a generic suggestion to posters in general, about learning diplomacy on a forumn.

I am disapointed that you would even think I would suggested that about you, I have fully supported you and your decisions from day one, you know that. I was answering your post, in a general way about how all of us post at HW, not to you. Sorry you took it that way.

However, you don't mind saying "I am foolish" because of where I am on my path. Out of the mouth, proceedth the heart, if I remember correctly. Sounds like you are judging me in those remarks.

If you want, go to my thread, and read the reply I wrote to Tony, perhaps you would better understand my current situation and stance.

Actually I wrote that post and I always wait to consider my words before I post. You are a good guy and I know at times I am blunt. I speak my mind to a fault and have learned to weigh carefully what I say. I opted to erase the post before I posted it. It was not intended for the forum
I thought it better to discuss it through email. With your permission I would like to delete it. It was accidentally posted. Todd
