I had the post-colonoscopy wrapup with my gastroenterologist yesterday. The only thing out of whack in my colon was a small amount of diverticulosis ("osis", not "itis"). A common finding, he says. Pockets that have the potential to become inflamed in the future (diverticulitis). Eat more fiber, drink plenty of water. No problem.
I asked him if he saw any sign that I had had radiation, and he said no. He said he sometimes treats patients with radiation proctitis, but not as many in the past and the damage he sees is nothing compared to that of 20 years ago. In my case only my medical history informed him that I had had radiation. There was no inflammation or any other signs visible in the scope.
It was kind of cool seeing my appendix from the inside, and reassuring to find out that everything looks normal.
