Prednisolone

A member of my PC support group told me me recently that he has been prescribed Prednisolone for his PC.

Could someone enlighten me as to why he would be prescribed Prednisolone the only thing I have been able

to find is it is a steroid and should not be taken long term. He said he feels very good since he started taking

this drug any information would be great.

Steroids are widely used to treat prostate cancer. It is suspected that some patients with more advanced PCa still have hormone-sensitive disease that can be stimulated by weak androgens of adrenal origin, and that these androgens could be suppressed by prednisolone and other steroids through its negative feedback on secretion of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH). In other words, prednisolone can block the small amount of androgens produced by the adrenal glands and this slows down PCa progression.
