New diagnosis for my father. PSA level 48.8, Gleason score of 8

I am looking everywhere and really am getting information overload. I want to know the facts and what to expect. I know everyone is different and this is devastating to me. He is my only family I have.

Here are the things I know

PSA level 48.8
Prostate glad 14ccm.... what does that mean?
IT also says right nodule dense calcifications right transistion and peripheral zones
Gleason 4+4=8
90% core max
Right 6/6 Gl 4 & 3
Left 6/6 Gl 4 & 3

This is all the info they gave me. We had other tests... a couple MRI's bone scan... a couple of other things but it has not shown that it spread unless it is microscopic. My father is 64 years old and has not had any symptoms besides needing to pee alot.

Could any of you give me any clue what is going on? This is bad isn't it. Anyone in similar situation? My father refuses radiation or Chemo. He agreed to the hormone treatment.

Welcome to HW. It is really hard to know how bad it is, but his PSA and Gleason scores are high. Not sure why he would not try Radiation or Surgery as they offer a possible cure, and then if they dont work he can use HT on down the road. But hopefully he will be around for a long time. Keep us posted and my best to you and your family. The men and women on here are great so others will be chiming in tonight or tomorrow.

Hormone Treatment is a great start. And your Dad can have many many years ahead of him.

My PSA is a little higher - well ok a lot higher - tests have shown the prostate cancer has spread to the bones. So I'm in a bit worse condition than your Dad - and we are the same age.

What Hormone Treatment is he looking at? Do you know?

Be calm, yeah I know scary. But there are lots of treatments available for your Dad and more on the way.

Welcome, also, to HW.

Sorry about your dad's situation. He definitely needs treatment, but he should consider all the normal primary treatment options, including radiation, surgery, and/or HT. A 2nd opinion with a good oncologist might be a good step.

Please keep us posted of his condition, and feel free to ask questions and even vent if you need to clear your mind, we can take it.

You have come to the right place for information. Your dad's numbers aren't good but they are not the worse we have seen. There are options for him. He should be talking to an Oncologist who specializes in PCa and a radiation Oncologist so he can formulate a plan of attack. Good luck.

Your father has systemic disease. That means he is not curable with conventional treatments. He can expect many years of life with those treatments in common use today. He may consider radiation at some time later. The individual character of his disease may show if this radiation is possible or potentially beneficial.
He should consider seeking treatment through an experienced prostate oncologist. They are somewhat difficult to find. He may also benefit from an opinion with a radiologist who treats cancer. With the treatments we have today he has many years to go. Those coming in the near future can only extend that time.
