I have recently (yesterday) been diagnosed with prostate cancer. I also have an ileostomy. Has anyone out there been through this. They say that surgery to remove the prostate can be rather difficult. any comments would be helpful. I would like be somewhat "armed" when I go talk with the professionals.

Can't help you on the ileostomy front, but I can tell you that the robotic surgery isn't that rough. I had my RALP on a Friday, I was home within 36 hours and went for a mile walk 48 hours later. It did take me about 7 weeks to not need 12 hours of sleep per night, but that has been the worst part. I do hear that the open procedure is a trial though. Without knowing your particulars, it's hard to reccomend surgery or radiation. But, whatever you do choose to do, you did find a good place for reccomendations. Good luck.

With the prior surgery, I wonder about the scarring, etc. from that. Would that hamper the robotic? I don't know. Robotic is what I had and never a regret. I do wonder if I had to have another laparoscopic procedure, such as an appendectomy or gall bladder removal, would that be an exclusion for the scope?

We have a member here, Perg, who had the PC surgery first, and ileostomy later. Not the same as you, but at least you know that the two can both be done on the same person. I don't recall if it was robotic or open...probably open.

I wonder if you meant difficult for the patient, or difficult for the surgeon? Most the the guys here, including me, did fairly well, for surgery. It's challenging enough for the surgeon that you really want someone with a lot of experience. Lot of varying opinions on how much is enough. The docs I talked to said you need to do at least 40. Some people, I forget who, say 200. My own surgeon had done around 1200 when he did me 3 years ago. Now he's around 3000.

I am he. I had an open RP to remove my prostate in 2008, then in 2010, due to severe radiation damage from Salvage Radiation, had the ileoostomy surgery (uruosotmy-stoma), this was done as open surgery as well.

If there is any questions you want to ask, will be happy to try. I would think it would be very difficult to have the RP after the ileiostomy surgery, due to how things have been re-routed inside you. I would also think, that if it can be done, it would have to be in the form of open Surgery.

Thanks for the comments. I am starting consults with doctors this week and hope to get alot more info.
