RED MEAT CONSUMPTION

Now that I don't have a prostate anymore should I assume that I don't need to worry about my intake of red meat? Regarding to "prostate cancer" of course.

cmetalman, that's a great question to ask.

While fatty red meats have been shown to be "cancer fuels" and specifically linked to aggressive PC, they are also fuels for heart attacks. Heart disease is the #1 killer of all men diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Choose wisely.

I think you got your answer. We all have to use common sense with all the info out about red meat consumption!

I eat red meat in moderation, too. Probably more often (on average) than once every two weeks, but probably less often than once per week.

My tastes have changed. Boiled, liquified fat which oozes from fatty steaks turns my stomach, so I, too, choose the lean organic meats.

ummm, you can tempt me with a Philly cheese steak.

Is this study paid for by paultry farmers?

cmetalman, I've been to Pat's in south Philly. I think they've undergone on a "cost reduction" program because I thought the meat portion was sorta skimpy. I'll be back in Philly starting next month when my daughter starts college there, but probably won't be going to Pat's or Geno's.

Since my Dx I limit my red meat consumption to once or twice a month.
And pork, despite the pork industry campaign, is not the "other white meat"...
... pork is red meat!

Had a NY Strip at a fine restaurant last night and thoroughly enjoyed it - so I'm done for July.

The real answer, as it is with the dietary stuff, all things in moderation. That's the consistent message I have gotten from all my doctors, and from the oncology dieitians I have access to. Not one of them suggest to eliminate all red meat, cancer or no cancer. Eat it less often, eat smaller portions, eat leaner cuts, etc. They are all more concerned about proccessed meats, like lunch meats, most hot dogs, bacon, sausage, and things like that.

I think that’s smart thinking, JohnKeats.   The notion of moderation (the falacy of moderation/mediocracy) in the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.) is a prescript ion for a the typical American heart attack and numerous cancers.   If you want to “stack the odds in your favor” for the best possible outcomes, then you might want to follow what the leading doctors who have dedicated their careers to fighting prostate cancer are telling their patients.   And thankfully, you don’t have to be a patient (no travel required!) of Dr Myers, Lam, Scholz, Carroll, or the others who are the world-recognized leaders because they widely publish their patient instructions on diet and exercise in books, videos, online guidelines, etc.  Furthermore, many of their patients who are also HealingWell contributors have been generous in re-iterate their message, which is basically:   they recommend doing a bit more than following “moderation in everything.”  They are encouraging that patients educate themselves about which foods are the "cancer fighters," and which are the "cancer fuels;"  red meat is obviously a "fuel."   Here’s a valuable thought to keep in mind; it is a quote from Dr Servan-Schreiber, author of the book “ Anticancer:   A New Way of Life ” (an excellent resource I personally recommend for those interested in “stacking the odds in their favor” and learning about the "fighers" and "fuels.")   Interviewer :  How does the traditional American diet create conditions for cancer to thrive?    Dr Servan-Schreiber :  Look at the American national dish: hamburger and french fries, with a white bun and ketchup. You couldn't do better if you wanted to try to promote cancer growth : red meat (the No. 1 food ingredient associated with a variety of cancers ), grown on corn and soy (which remove the healthy omega-3s that are found in grass-fed meat), and bovine growth hormone (which stimulates all cell growth, including cancer cell growth); french fries: a rare vegetable that does not help slow cancer growth but, on the contrary, stimulates insulin release and thus cell growth, dipped in omega-6 inflammation-promoting oil and fried to increased oxidative stress; white bread: which again stimulates insulin release.     Keep an open mind, be your own advocate, look for the mountains of evidence, and choose wisely…       edit :  typo Post Edited (Casey59) : 7/26/2012 9:52:44 AM (GMT-6)

The supplements I take is Pomegranate extract (with one glass of juice in the morning), 5,000 units of Vitamin D per day, fish oil for omega-3, and extra calcium.

My wife makes lots of green vegetables (broccoli, spinach and kale dominant), I snack on fruit during the day, and we saturate stuff with turmeric, garlic, and cooked tomatoes.

We got most of this anti-cancer diet from the Dr. Serven-Schreiber book. I bought it on Dec 7, 2011 and read the whole book in two days. On the third day we were tossing out half our pantry and going to the supermarket to get a whole new way of life.

I was very saddened to hear that Dr. Serven-Schreiber lost his battle against brain cancer just about a year ago. I don't think his death invalidates any of the book. He was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer 20 years ago, and survived for two decades.

He wrote another book right after his final diagnosis which I'd like to read, although it's very sad he passed away.

Why do you always, always have to be condenscending. Moderation is a key element in a healthy, balanced diet. That point can not be waved away because you don't like the term. You constantly use the phrase "stacking the odds", I don't have a problem with those words, and I doubt anyone else does either, but its your term, not some rigid medical practice.

This diet stuff gets argued to death here, and can be confusing. So when an experienced dietary oncologist talks about moderation, it is not a foolish or mediocre term as you describe.

Balance is so important, and a lot of people that make radical changes to their diets without being under the guidence of a good doctor or dietician is simply guessing when it comes to the balance part of the equation.

Total avoidence of certain foods in general, is not part of a balanced diet. Not talking about those with diabetes, etc, or those that special health issues, like Chrons's, etc.

Your opinion on the subject is good, but its not the final word. Newcomers need to realize that, and weigh in all opinions, but more importantly, run it by their doctor or oncologist before making any major diet changes.
