I agree....

My takeaway was somewhat different.  While Dr. Myers did make the points that Casey mentioned, I thought the BIG POINT was that the USPSTF did a huge disservice to men.  He called the members' "jerks" and characterized their work in more pejorative terms.  He feels the lack of screening will cause a big increase in advanced PCa and he is gearing up to deal with that problem which he feels would not occur with proper screening.

Although mentioned as a significant problem, the main focus of this video was not about overtreatment of PC.  It was about the "callous disregard" for patients like me with respect to the new screening guidelines recently presented by the USPSTF.  Because of these guidelines, an increasing number of guys will now be diagnosed only after they have symptoms. 

Guys don't need another excuse not to get tested, but they have one now...and it has gotten a lot of news coverage.  This was my issue when I was 44.  Mixed messages from those in authorities.  Testing not needed, testing is good, well not so good, etc...  The average Joe 40 year old should be screened and know he needs to be tested yearly.  The average Joe 40 year old probably won't and these JERKS didn't help the situation.

Dr. Myers looks physically upset like I've never seen him.  I have that same emotion frequently.

 

I couldn't agree with him more.

I really feel men have been done a major disservice in how prostate cancer is handled. As prevalent as breast cancer (I think a little more prevalent actually) but gets a fraction of the research funding. Screening is actually discounted. Doctors are ridiculously careless. The first red flag for my husband should have gone up 6 years earlier, if his doctor had been paying attention to the PSA interpretation guidelines, with more and flashier red flags ignored after that -- by the time he was flagged, he already had metastatic disease with lymph nodes and bone mets. It infuriates me to think of how different his odds would be had he been diagnosed when the first warnings showed up. His doctor's excuse -- on any one report, the absolute number was ok (below the warning level). But if he'd bothered to compare to the previous year, he would have seen big jumps (more than doubling some years). I'd think we'd have grounds for legal action except for reading these boards -- his story is all too common, apparently ignoring the screening is roughly the standard of care. And now not screening at all is the reco -- ridiculous!

It's a crime how poorly PCa is handled, and this latest decision is just adding insult to injury.
