I was going to write a "Vent/Rant" about
this subject, but to say the last week has been been "busy" would be an understatement of immense scale.
As I was coming back from Rochester, I flew Delta. On my first flight a male flight attendant said how much it must hurt to have cancer in the family. I looked at him like he was from another world, I suppose, because he quickly said "Oh, you don't often see a man wearing a Childhood or Ovarian cancer ribbon!". I was so astounded that I sat back down without putting my bag away. I thought a moment, and then explained that the pin was blue, but a tie. He didn't get it, thinking I was husband / dad of the cancer patient. I explained that it was for prostate cancer, for me and my friends. Not often you see someone searching for a shovel to dig a hole to crawl into away from a battlefield. We had a good talk, and he went away with tie pins ( these were extra Prostate Cancer Canada blue tie pins that they sent to be passed around to newbies at GFMPH) for the crew. During our conversation, he mentioned a bit of disgust that so much fuss was made over putting pink ribbons on everything that they were actually short of some galley supplies because on the 30th of Sept (not yet October), they could no longer use the non-pink ribbon versions. And they mentioned BC in the flight announcements, but not PCa. He apologized profusely as I was getting off the plane.
Then on 1 Oct I see big headline network news about the White House being pink, and incessant mention on tv. Then ball games of any sort are pink. The eggs I bought tonight are stenciled with a pink ribbon. I was hit up multiple times yesterday for donations, both coming and going at the same store.
Let's see, did I see anything about PCa in "public" during September? Nothing, Nada, Niente, Nulla. Except for wearing our shirts and hats around town for the weekend, and passing out pins where I could, I think the month passed un-noticed.
Blue pin for my wife or child. Yeah. ARGH.
