Off topic: Kentucky Earthquake today

Wife and I were taking a late morning nap before going on our mountain drive today. I was awakened by a loud weird rattling noise. First I thought it was the wind, but looking out the window, it was calm. But the entire bedroom window frame was shaking, it just didn't make sense. Lasted about 15 seconds and was precisely at 12:08 pm. Didn't think about it any more, I joked later and said mabe it was an earthquake.

This evening, while catching up on the news online, I read about the Kentucky Earthquake, was a 4.3 that hit at 12:08. Said it could felt as far south as Atlanta (we live 125 miles north of Atlanta).

Did any of you guys live close enough to feel it?

Wow, far away. In Cincinnati area many around area felt it, but we didn't. Having survived the earthquake in Haiti, very sensitive to movement. Maybe being in big, one floor, warehouse - CostCo - helped not to feel it.

130 miles east of Atlanta, and we didn't feel it. My brother in Rome Georgia didn't feel it either.

We live about 10 miles east of the mountains, had I been standing on the floor at the time, quite sure I would have felt it more. The bed absorbed some it I am certain, but it woke me up from a deep sleep, very sensitive to noises, especially a wooden framed window shaking hard. Just didn't make sense at the moment.

Probably not super common around those parts, but you want to know globally on earthquakes and what is happening and where. Shows a map with where hits are, magnitude and more....you can check this out daily. The Pacific rim, Asian rim and Alaska are your mega high risk areas, see the mapping and daily hits and some with heavier power on occassion. It is a matter of when out there, not an 'if' anymore.

The possible tsunami's that could hit the Pacific from such could be additionally unreal. Could earthquakes be triggered somehow (via other than nature), that answer seems to be a possibility and you would have to do your own research on such. Noticed this last year and all the events and hurricane Sandy, it is not typical and myself don't believe global warming theory. Will leave it right there.  cool

Interesting, that the largest earthquake ever recorded in the east coast US, was in Charleston, SC in the late 1800s. We have had several tiny ones here in the years I have been here, but never felt one here, until yesterday's KY quake. It was the weirdest sensation to be awakened that way with a window shaking, just didn't equate to me at the time.

I didn't feel anything and I'm in Charlotte.  But our local news reported that people more towards the foothills- Morganton, etc. did feel it.  Spartanburg lines up pretty close along the old fault lines that run from the Appalachains to Charleston, so I'm not surprised that you felt it.  That old fault is getting more active- we've had several in the past decades- who knows we could be the next California.  LOL 

No- seriously, I hope there wasn't much damage anywhere.  I too worry that Pacific Rim is getting more active.  But I think it is realted more to 'natural' cycles and forces than to global warming.  Our planet is not the solid ball we would like to believe.  And is subjected to more forces than we can imagine.  Gravity isn't just something that keeps us on the surface.  And having a hot, liquid core with basicly a thin solid skin we call continents makes our world much less stable that we want to believe.

It must have been close to the surface. We get 4 to 5's on the west coast pretty often, and mostly can't feel them.

I think you can only feel them when the Richter scale exceeds your PSA.

hmm, with a post surgery/post srt psa of 40 plus, I would hate to see the earthquake you think I would feel, lol.

In my little neck of the woods I have lived through a hurricane a volcanic eruption and a 6.3 quake that made the streets roll. I live 50 miles as the crow flys from the coast. The cascadia subduction zone sits off the coast. If it ever cuts loose (it is overdue I it will get fugly around here. I hope I am home when it does.
