A write up on the Urologist in Charleston my Oncologist wants me to see, tell me what you think

According to "U.S. News", Dr. Keane is ranked among the top 1% of Urologists in the entire U.S. for 2012. Sounds pretty up there to me.

Yes, I understand. However, it is worrisome that it has taken him several months of researching your unique situation to line you up with someone he is confident in.

Are you at center that has an alliance with M. D. Anderson Physicians Network or at an MD Anderson Cancer Center? I'm only curious, as it is alarming that with the numerous doctors at MD Anderson, they would not think anyone in their own center is qualified. Shakes my confidence in them.

As I understand it, being “with” MD Anderson doesn’t really describe the institutional arrangement.   Here’s how it works… MD Anderson is a large cancer research facility.   Their researchers run many studies…in fact, so many are run out of MD Anderson that they don’t see nearly enough patients in their two facilities (one in Houston, TX and the other in Orlando, FL) to fill the trial rosters.   So, they have established a “network” of community hospitals & cancer care centers around the country to help them recruit study participants …they call it their “Community Clinical Oncology Program Research Base.”   MD Anderson “certifies” their program, which basically means that the local facility hires a case coordinator on-site to liaise 3-ways between the researchers at MDA, the local clinicians, and the patients.   The network’s mission statement: “The mission of the Research Base is to enable more patients, particularly those in the community, to have access to state-of-the-art cancer care and to enhance the health of patients affected by cancer.   Affiliation with a CCOP site allows patients to have access to clinical protocols without having to relocate or leave the support of their communities.”   There is mutual benefit:   MD Anderson gets more patients for their study rosters faster than they would have otherwise gotten, and the local hospitals/cancer center folks get access to studies that typically wouldn’t have trickled into the smaller community settings.   It’s a win-win.

So you are from Charleston, as in birth. It's the same St. Francis hospital system, state wide, I live in the Upstate, outside of Greenville, where St. Francis is a major player among the hospital systmes.

Been eating at Condon's pub for more than 25 years, very familiar with it, Kind of gone downhill the past few years, unfortunately.

Hope your wife does well from her surgery. Yes, I know now what it feels like to be a full time care taker for someone else, while at the same time needing care, lol.

I agree worry....that was quite rude. Looks like another member who will be on purgs ignore list. There seems to be one common denominator in the htreads that have controversy....its name is purgatory. hes real quick to give someone advice but you try to do the same with him and hes all butt hurt.

and to answer you more directly, dr. is affiliated with md anderson, not directly "of" them, if i understand the relationship correctly. his practice is part of a large hospital system here, spartanburg regional

as far as the time that has gone by, not the dr's fault, it was me trying to make up my mind how far i wanted to pursue this next step, and neither of us felt it was a life or death situation.

dont you think "i will not post on your threads again" a bit over the top for what appears to be a honest misunderstanding?  the other poster in question has been on my back since the day he arrived at HW, and it annoyed me, to see him jump to answer your question, when it was mine to answer.  but if you are that thin skinned, there is nothing i can do to change your mind.  no one is perfect here, cetainly not myself

This post is directed at Casey's response and following posts, since I don't know what will be added while I'm considering this one.

David, I hope you found the answer you were seeking.  I am sorry about Peg's back being in such bad condition.  If things ever get too rough for you, I hope you will seek help in taking care of the house, cooking, laundry, etc.  Wishing you the best!

David, I'm late to your thread but I think you know my opinon which I have expressed to you many times.  Your case appears to be beyond the expertise of what you have been able to find locally so it makes sense to consult more expert physicians in other locations.  The doc you reference seems capable so I would say go for it and the sooner the better.

Good luck David, he sounds top notch. Hope he can finally take care of whatever is causing that relentless pain. Praying that your wife will soon be on the mend too. So much for you both to be going through. Stay strong.
