Cost of Robotic Prostatectomy - No Insurance

Just wondered what the typical costs are for the Robotic Prostatectomy if you do not have Insurance

I believe mine cost $64K, but I had insurance so my out of pocket was minimal.

But I suspect they would have been willing to do it for half if I did not have insurance, so the $35K is probably accurate.

Just FYI - If you were interested in CyberKnife, Dr. Katz in Flushing, NY ( near NYC) will do the entire procedure for $18K plus the cost of the MRI.

I had a DaVinci prostatectomy in Nov. 2011 at Mayo Clinic. As I recall, the overall bill was around $28,000. I am on Medicare & think my out of pocket portion was just under $2,000.

July 2011 local PSA lab reading 6.41 (from 4.1 in 2009). Mayo Clinic PSA Sept. 2011 was 5.7.
Local urologist DRE revealed significant BPH, but no lumps.
PCa Dx Aug. 2011 at age of 61.
Biopsy revealed adenocarcinoma in 3 of 20 cores (one 5%, two 20%). T2C.
Gleason score 3+3=6.
CT of abdomen, bone scan both negative.
DaVinci prostatectomy 11/1/11 at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN), nerve sparing, age 62.
My surgeon was Dr. Matthew Tollefson, who I highly recommend.
Final pathology shows tumor confined to prostate.
5 lymph nodes, seminal vesicles, extraprostatic soft tissue all negative.
1.0 x 0.6 x 0.6 cm mass involving right posterior inferior,
right posterior apex & left mid posterior prostate. Right
posterior apex margin involved by tumor over a 0.2 cm length, doctor says this is insignificant.
Prostate 98 grams, tumor 2 grams.
Catheter out in 7 days. No incontinence, occasional minor dripping.
First post-op exam 2/13/12, PSA <0.1.
Only semi-erections so far, with continued improvement.

Tom, I imagine that the cost of robotic surgery depends on where you go for it: in NYC, if you go to a well-known hospital such as Memorial Sloan Kettering, NY Hospital or Columbia Presbyterian, you'll likely pay top dollar. We live about one hour north and west of New York City. The hospital bill was $24,000 (room and board and the OR). No idea what the surgeon's charge was or the anesthesiologist as we did not receive any documentation about their charges...probably they accepted whatever the negotiated rate was with the insurance company. I would guess that the total bill for my husband's surgery (including office visits, CT scans, physical before surgery, etc.) was somewhere around $40,000 - perhaps higher.
