Biopsy

Hi all

I have an appointment booked to see the consultant here in Scotland. My PSA has gone up from 3.2 to 7 in about 2 years! I am being pressed by the guy to have a biopsy having read all the stuff about complications I feel a little uneasy, especially when he said it would be done by a nurse and secondly they keep no figures for post operative infection. He could tell me what the national average was, 1-3% but thats a meaningless figure. what is the consensus amognst you all should I do the biopsy or leave it and see if the figures continue to rise.

I see you are still hoping that someone here will come up with a boffo excuse for you to avoid that biopsy that you know you ought to get. Afraid I can't help with that but good luck. My position is unchanged from a couple of weeks ago when

You should by all means get the biopsy done. If it is done correctly -- with antibiotics the day before and a few after -- the risk of infection is low enough that worrying about it falls in the "looking for an excuse" category.

One thing to remember: in the Manly Man's Guide to Manliness (page 34, second paragraph) there is a specific exception made for people with white coats poking around up your bum with spring-loaded instruments. You are allowed to be nervous and encouraged to seek pharmaceutical detachment from the process if it is available.

Personally, I like a bit of Valium before the procedure. The nurse will want you to have someone to drive you home if you take the Valium. If you time it right the tranquilizer will have worn off enough by the time you are done with the procedure, wiped off, and out of there that your driver can stop off at the Pub on the way home.

Let us know when you get that biopsy and we'll keep you company while you wait for the results. That waiting is also nerve-wracking although in a nicer way.

The first time I had a DRE by a urologist it was by his (young) female P.A. Once I was bent over with my pants down it didn't matter any more.

A couple of weeks ago I had a routine follow-up from DaVinci surgery last June (different urologist) and ended up seeing his (female, young, attractive) PA and the discussion mostly centered around being impotent -- wonderful. It was uncomfortable at first, but she was very professional so it didn't matter.

At least nobody's shoving things up my butt anymore since surgery.

Hi Andrew and all you guys who have taken the time out of your days to write a supportive comment. Andrew I read your blog and perhaps its a personality thing or I am just too early in the process or I am just too stupid to understand whats going on. Although I am 62 I am very fit I play a lot of explosive sports and can still teach the yougsters a thing or two. The thing is me and my body dont feel unwell in any way shape or form we get along together. I trust it and it trusts me!!!! Are you getting how weird I am.. Anyway I really dont feel anything about this thing that might be growing inside me I feel totally ambivalent towards it I dont worry I dont lose sleep and it just is one of those things thatwill be delt with when the need arises. The only issue I have is my wife worrying and pushing me all the time to take some action and I suppose thats the reason why I am now doing something about it along with the suggestions you guys have made.
So my journey starts at the end of the month I think I should be fired up for it by then but til then theres just too much to do to think of it!!!
I hope there are no shrinks reading this they might decide that I have something much more seriously wrong. Once again thanks to you all. Have a great New Year!

Thanks for your reply. I am at the dont give a toss stage kinda fatalistic if the grim reaper wants me he can bloody well try but I aint going easy if its a fight he wants bring it on. Youre right must get the armoury of knowledge all a bit new to this concern about the body bit but for the first time in my life I will need to be a bit more me centred. Dont know too much about the procedure but dont you stick your bum in her face!!! Will let you know but I reckon it will be a train wreck anyone who wants to go there must be desparate

Maybe the pay is good and/or she likes to get kinky ...... I had a "whole body" check by a female dermatology this week and I swear she spent a lot of time checking out my groin area - no problem for me.
