Coffee has two ingredients to be concerned with, caffeine and acids.
My PT nurse early on suggested that I cut back on coffee, which I did for a couple of years. The reason was the acids which irritate the bladder. She did not suggest cutting it out completely, as it has its own sort of "withdrawal" for those of us who drink a lot of it. Over time I have picked back up on my daily amount, and I am having slightly more leakage, but with the HT, I need something to get me going.
As to caffeine, I've always avoided decaf. I went to a coffee roasting facility, and was told by the engineers who run it that the process of taking the caffeine out uses chemicals that are just as bad for you as the caffeine itself. Not dangerous, but it is a tradeoff.
But the bottom line from the PT nurse and staff was that the acids were the bigger issue as one tries to regain continence.
Lets not even talk about beer. Anything carbonated (water, beer, sodas) are a guaranteed full pad with no warning for me.
