Reducing size of your prostate.

Almost 3 months ago I had TUNA prostate surgery to reduce my prostate.

(A hot needle through my urithita to remove prostate tissue.) Today I had a prostate biopsy.  When I had the TUNA, my prostate was 70 mg's.  Today it was 90mg's.  What went wrong...is the size of my prostate dangerous...The average size of a prostate is between 25 and 30mg's.

The prostate tissue was supposidly blocking the opening between my bladder and urithita and not allowing me to urinate through my penis. Any info here?

We had a TURP done 4 months ago, sounds like the same precedure,prostate was squeezing off the uretha! can piss like a 15 y/o now!

I don't know why your prostate would seem to be larger after the surgery. Wish I could give you an answer. Has your doctor given an explanation?

Galileo, thanks for the info on the comparison between cc's and grams.

arteesto1, using this comparison, my prostate was weighted after my DaVinci at 98 grams. I guess that would be about 98 cc's. My surgeon said it was 3-4 times normal size.

I was already suffering from tremendous urination problems do to this enlargement (BPH). It had me taking 15-20 minutes to do what used to take 15-20 seconds.

My local urologist acknowledged that my higher PSA reading of 6.41 (actually 5.7 as tested when I went to Mayo Clinic a few weeks later) could be explained by the BPH -- but he also stressed very seriously that it also could be masking the presence of PC, especially since it runs in my family.

He talked me into a biopsy, which I had declined a couple years earlier. But with my PSA having jumped by 2 points from a couple years earlier, I felt I'd better give in & have the biopsy this time.

Due to the size of my prostate, the doctor took TWENTY samples and I was diagnosed with PC. The stats can be seen in my signature.

Anyway, I ultimately chose to have my surgery at Mayo Clinic because I am already a patient there for my regular annual physicals. The day before I met the robot, my surgeon performed a cystocopy so he could get an advance look at what he would be dealing with.

I can quote him right after he finished the test as I still lay on the exam table. "You have a whopper of a prostate."

He went on to explain that prostates of such a huge size tend to deform as time goes on and can even twist and begin to encroach into the bladder, etc. He then assured me that, due to this extreme BPH condition, my decision on surgery (as opposed to radiation) was very justified.

So I had the surgery the next day and now, while hopefully cancer-free, I again take only 15-20 seconds to do what had been taking 15-20 minutes. Urination is now literally a breeze and I am completely continent.

The main purpose of sharing all this info is to give you some insight on what a large prostate can do. Hopefully yours will not continue to grow to the size that mine reached. But at least you have an idea of what could possibly happen in a couple years.

I would also urge you to continue getting DRE's and, of course, PSA tests to keep right on top of the state of your prostate. I'm sure you will be just fine as long as you continue having those regular check-ups.

July 2011 local PSA lab reading 6.41 (from 4.1 in 2009). Mayo Clinic PSA Sept. 2011 was 5.7.
Local urologist DRE revealed significant BPH, but no lumps.
PCa Dx Aug. 2011 at age of 61.
Biopsy revealed adenocarcinoma in 3 of 20 cores (one 5%, two 20%). T2C.
Gleason score 3+3=6.
CT of abdomen, bone scan both negative.
DaVinci prostatectomy 11/1/11 at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN), nerve sparing, age 62.
My surgeon was Dr. Matthew Tollefson, who I highly recommend.
Final pathology shows tumor confined to prostate.
5 lymph nodes, seminal vesicles, extraprostatic soft tissue all negative.
1.0 x 0.6 x 0.6 cm mass involving right posterior inferior,
right posterior apex & left mid posterior prostate. Right
posterior apex margin involved by tumor over a 0.2 cm length, doctor says this is insignificant.
Prostate 98.3 grams, tumor 2 grams. Prostate size 5.0 x 4.7 x 4.5 cm.
Catheter out in 7 days. No incontinence, occasional minor dripping.
First post-op exam 2/13/12, PSA <0.1.
Semi-erections now happening 14 months post-op & getting stronger.
