PSA 78 and no cancer?

Had a biopsy Monday..PSA 78.  Is it possible for my report when it comes back next Monday to show no cancer.  If so, what can cause such a high PSA other than prostate cancer?...and is it treatable?

Very high PSA reading, it could be caused by a bad prostate infection. Has your doctor given you any antibiotics to take prior to you biopsy?

If you don't mind, what is your age range, and did you have any prior PSA readings before the "78" one?

I second what David said. BPH (enlarged prostate) and an infection can cause high PSA.

I am 77....In a two year period, my PSA went from 5.7 to 7.6 to 20 to 40.2 and now 78.  Is this any help on your question of my age and previous PSA readings.

very helpful on your age, with any of these rises, did you doctor or urologist ever check your prostate for signs of infection? again, were you ever put on any kind of meds or antibiotics to see if there was an infection, and thus declining the number?

fortunately, the biopsy you underwent should give a clearer indication of what is going on with you. hopefully you do not have prostate cancer, rather you not have to join us for that very reason

please let us know the results when you get them.

Hi arteesto1,

Have you had any recent problems urinating? If there has been a slow stream, weak stream, interrupted, etc., since your last "lower" PSA, the others are right in saying it could be an enlarged prostate, or BPH. This is a benign condition and hopefully will help explain your high PSA.

July 2011 local PSA lab reading 6.41 (from 4.1 in 2009). Mayo Clinic PSA Sept. 2011 was 5.7.
Local urologist DRE revealed significant BPH, but no lumps.
PCa Dx Aug. 2011 at age of 61.
Biopsy revealed adenocarcinoma in 3 of 20 cores (one 5%, two 20%). T2C.
Gleason score 3+3=6.
CT of abdomen, bone scan both negative.
DaVinci prostatectomy 11/1/11 at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN), nerve sparing, age 62.
My surgeon was Dr. Matthew Tollefson, who I highly recommend.
Final pathology shows tumor confined to prostate.
5 lymph nodes, seminal vesicles, extraprostatic soft tissue all negative.
1.0 x 0.6 x 0.6 cm mass involving right posterior inferior,
right posterior apex & left mid posterior prostate. Right
posterior apex margin involved by tumor over a 0.2 cm length, doctor says this is insignificant.
Prostate 98.3 grams, tumor 2 grams. Prostate size 5.0 x 4.7 x 4.5 cm.
Catheter out in 7 days. No incontinence, occasional minor dripping.
First post-op exam 2/13/12, PSA <0.1.
Semi-erections now happening 14 months post-op & getting stronger.

Possibly benign, but not probable given the rise in your PSA and age. Statistics show that it is time for PCa to show up. When I received a reading of 59 several docs told me PCa was a sure thing at that level. Only the biopsy can confirm cancer.

There are many great treatments and at your age surgery is not a good option. Thus the treatments available to you will not have as significant side effects. My brothe-in-law (age 75) and a client (age 79) were both diagnosed in the last eighteen months and are doing well after radiaition treatment.

The PSA history suggests doubling over time which is not a good sign.
Does not prove cancer, though.
The PSA density is the PSA divided by prostate size. Do you know the prostate size to compute PSA density?
A free PSA blood test can also be informative.
PSA can rise from infection and inflammation besides cancer.
