Curious thing about health insurance

My American health insurance did not cover my surgery. If I wanted to have surgery I could only go to surgeons in their network.

My Friend in Italy has a very inexpensive private insurance in Italy which is fully covering his surgery (robotic) in America with the surgeon of his choice.

I find that pretty amazing and can't quite understand why I, and other Americans, are so limited in our choices.

Anyway, it was great news for him. He had decided for surgery but really wanted to do it here in America.

My Insurance is the same way sort of.
In network, I just have to meet my deductible and they pick up the rest.
Out of network, it's my deductible + 20%
My deductible is $6000, but everything thereafter is covered 100% including all drugs as long as it's in network.

Not bashing anyone. I actually find the liberty my friend has a welcome development and wish we all had such liberties. He had done his research about surgery, radiation and AS and had opted for surgery in America, with a well know surgeon only if his coverage in Europe would cover it. I was positive they wouldn't. So now I get to host him and his wife, drive him to his surgery and then let him recover in my house for that 7-10 days after surgery. He expects to fly back to europe as soon as they take the catheter out.

Does your insurance have an out-of-pocket maximum? Mine has a limit of $2,000 and even if I go out of network, it pays 100% at that point. However, if the out of network provider charges more than the amount the insurance company considers appropriate, that "overage" does not count against the 2K cap.
