good luck I will be in Charleston myself by Saturday afternoon. trying to remember which hospital you are using, is it part of MUSC?

I just read your post tonight.
By now your surgery will have been completed.
Welcome to the other side! Hope everything went well.
You will be walking the halls tonight with your catheter begining the healing process. Good luck with your path report.

Keep us informed. I started posting on HW the day after my surgery and got lots of encouragement from my brothers and sisters here.

Roper is a great hospital. My sister and mother both worked there.
It is right down the street from MUSC.

My dear friends, and I mean that with all sincerety, thank you for your prayers of support and encouargement.  I am simply overwhelmed by the post about my surgery and yes!!!! I made it to the otherside.  However, it wasn't without its problems.  I was wondering if someone was sending me a message to go home.  It started in preop where they had to stick me six times to get an IV line started.  Three different people gave it a try before striking a good vein.  They said dehydration due to the bowel prep and a late afternoon  surgery were to blame for the difficulties.  Then as surgery time approached at 3:00 a nurse came in to announce my surgery would be delayed for 2.5  hours because another surgery was running long.  My blood pressure was already running high and I think it went through the roof with that news. To say I was really stressed out would be an understatement.  My wife was unsuccessful in convincing the doctor to give me something to ease my extreme uneasiness. He was afraid it would wear off before surgery and I guess he didn't want to give me anything that far in advance.  To his credit he gave me some joy juice about 15 minutes before surgery.  They wheeled me into the OR and I was wide awake, although I didn't care.  I assisted the nurses in sliding on the operating table and watched everyone feverishly in action while bright lights shined down on me. Next thing I know a mask is put over my face and they tell me to breath deeply.  All the while it seems like they are putting some type of foam packaging all around me to make me secure.  Next thing I remember is waking up telling anyone who would listen that I had to crap.  My request fell on deaf ears. A short time later I was wheeled into my room where the clock said 10:30.  Turns out it was a long surgery because the surgeon found scar tissue on my colon and said it was glued down and he had to work to free it. He said apparently I had some type of severe inflamation at one time causing the scar tissue to form. Don't know when that could have happened.  It was a fairly rough night with bladder spasms.  Nurses must have given me drugs half dozen times between 11:30 and 5 AM before I got permanent relief.  The rest of the day has been uneventul.  Surprisingly I have not been hungry, but beef broth and jello for lunch and dinner along with ice chips are not very appealing.  Doing regular walks up and down the hall. Had high hopes of going home today but the doctor came by late this afternoon  and said I would be here another night since I have not passed gas yet.  With all the hiccups along the way, I have to say  the staff has been super! Can't wait to get home and hope the pathology report Monday brings good news.
