I would try to find some genuine strength in that the doctor said it will be okay. This bodes very well for it probably being early stage and very curable.

This would have me feeling very confident (while not pleased that PC has struck again) in going to see the doctor.

Here's hoping & praying (and expecting) that you will both emerge from the doctor's office feeling much better.

Resident of Highland, Indiana just outside of Chicago, IL.
July 2011 local PSA lab reading 6.41 (from 4.1 in 2009). Mayo Clinic PSA Sept. 2011 was 5.7.
Local urologist DRE revealed significant BPH, but no lumps.
PCa Dx Aug. 2011 at age of 61.
Biopsy revealed adenocarcinoma in 3 of 20 cores (one 5%, two 20%). T2C.
Gleason score 3+3=6.
CT of abdomen, bone scan both negative.
DaVinci prostatectomy 11/1/11 at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN), nerve sparing, age 62.
My surgeon was Dr. Matthew Tollefson, who I highly recommend.
Final pathology shows tumor confined to prostate.
5 lymph nodes, seminal vesicles, extraprostatic soft tissue all negative.
1.0 x 0.6 x 0.6 cm mass involving right posterior inferior,
right posterior apex & left mid posterior prostate.
Right posterior apex margin involved by tumor over a 0.2 cm length, doctor says this is insignificant.
Prostate 98.3 grams, tumor 2 grams. Prostate size 5.0 x 4.7 x 4.5 cm.
Catheter out in 7 days. No incontinence, occasional minor dripping.
Post-op exams 2/13/12, 9/10/12, PSA <0.1.
Semi-firm erections now happening 14 months post-op & slowly getting a bit stronger.

Horrible news. Certainly is hard for you as it is your brother, and it brings back memories. But I agree with David, that your brother will probably look up to you for strength and knowledge, and I know you will be there for him. You know better than anyone that chances that PC will kill him are pretty slim (1 in 10)...try to stay positive.

Andrew, this is something I worry about, having five brothers myself.  But, I'm sure your newly-diagnosed brother will find strength, comfort, and a ton of helpful advice from the two of you who've already gone down this path.  Good luck to all three of you.

Sorry to hear this Andrew, but at least the doctor's prelim words can be of some comfort. I can't imagine how hard this is on you - but on the other hand try to focus on how your knowledge and experience with PCa will be helpful to your brother. . .

Sorry to hear about your brother. Sometimes life just doesn't seem fair to have all three of you dx with this beast.

Yes, depression is a terrible thing and working in your shop and writing blogs only helps a small amount--I gave up on my blogs since they pushed me deeper into depression so maybe just concentrate on your brother and the shop for awhile--just an idea!! No, life isn't fair but you will be there for him..

Well - more news I don't want to hear. The blood tests done last week show my brother's blood count is low - along with a bunch of other problems - I stopped listening half way through the doctor's little speech on the phone. What I do recall went something like this, "low blood count, blah, blah blah, urgent we get him into the hospital for a colonoscopy and an upper GI exam, blah, blah, two days prep, blah, have him here Tuesday.

The bottom line is they think he is bleeding somewhere in his GI system and he is very anemic. At first I wanted to delay this fun until after we see his Uro on the 11th but when I told the gastroenterologist that brother had PC and I wanted to deal with that first.the response was, "yes but the cancer won't kill him this week. This other thing could. I need him in the surgery center as soon as we can arrange it."

Okay, no pressure, I'll just take another day off, call in more health aids, practice wheelchair lifting...

and now my wife has a bad cold - likely the same one I had last week. Well at least I have a few days I can take care of her before launching full force back into hospital land.

sigh...

Maybe you could hire an answering service to get your phone for a while. That way when people call to give you bad news they could make an appointment for the next time you have an opening.

Sorry life seems to be piling on for you right now. It kinda sucks. But you knew that. Hang in there.
