Hang in there James. All the surgery date really means is that this is the day you become cancer free.
Somehow, I managed to get a good, complete night's sleep the night before my surgery. I got up in the morning & groomed my hair, etc., as always -- even though I knew it would not be staying that way for long. LOL
Everyone at the hospital, during pre-op, will be very nice and will probably each confirm your reason for being there, etc. You will be wheeled into the operating room and -- seemingly shortly afterward -- will simply wake up in the recovery room or your hospital room with all the "work" complete.
If your situation is anything like mine, you will be sleepy the rest of the day but will NOT be in any pain. You'll return home the next day, gripe about the catheter (although it is also painess) for the next 7 days, and then have it removed. Then your recovery will jumpstart.
After a couple months you'll have to remind yourself that you actually had surgery.
So it is kind of like an "adventure" coming up for you that will lead to the continuation of a long, healthy & active life.
One suggestion for when you return home: Have a nice, soft reclining chair to sleep on for the first few nights. MUCH more comfortable that way.
So, just hang in there -- everything is going to go very well & you're going to be just fine.
