Met with both med & rad Onc. yesterday. I was a bit concerned about my PSA rise. Each said it was nothing to be concerned about as the reading was still undectible. Rad. Onc. thought I might be a good candidate to stop Lupron at the 18th month mark due to a recent study. Med. Onc. (Who gives the injection) was not aware of study and wanted me to continue. But was ok with me stopping if I wanted. Given my stats decided to continue since my SE's have been light.
Is anyone aware of a study of stopping Lupron at 18 months with Gleason 9?

Good report. I agree with your doctor about your PSA numbers, you have nothing to worry about there.

That is a good number for your PSA. You can stop and monitor the PSA for a while to see if it stable.

Perhaps he meant the following. It showed that 18 months of adjuvant ADT after RT was as good as 36 months:

High-risk prostate cancer treated with pelvic radiotherapy and 36 versus 18 months of androgen blockade: Results of a phase III randomized study.

Why do they call PSA undetectable when the test detects PSA ? I realize the PSA is low, but there is still PSA present. I find the terminology confusing.

It would seem like you could take a little holiday from the Lupron, and see what the PSA does. On the other hand, perhaps one more dose and PSA test will see if your are developing non-androgen PC.

Good luck. If they identify which study they are referring to, please post it on HW.

Each manufacturer's test for PSA has a different lower limit of PSA detection. If the actual PSA is less than that that lower limit, it is undetectable by that particular test and indistinguishable from zero, and is reported as <x, where x is the lower detection
limit of that particular test.

Congrats bert....those look like good numbers and hope they continue for you. I know you and I are fairly similar in diagnosis and treatment...good to see you doing well and look forward to seeing your updates if you do go off Lupron. Ive been wanting to do the same but my PSA never got as low as yours and my last 2 went up some. Hopefully it was just a bounce as my Uro said and it will go back down....will drink a green beer for you today! Chris

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback.
I will ask rad. onc about study and report back.
JerryL. Yes I did get another 4 month injection. My S.E's are very light and I handle them well. (Except for the E.D)
Med. Onc. Will look into study and report back to me with his findings and recommendations.
