Can bone pain come and go?

My dad got PC with mets in 2005. He's been on Zytiga since october. When he started his PSA was 300 and it has decreased every month until last month when it was 50. His onchologist is very happy, but he ordered a MR in april just in case.

Yesterday he complained about shoulder pain, and today some back pain. He thought it was because he has carried his grandson too much the last days.
I'm afraid that it's the cancer that is active again, and causing pain. But even if it is the cancer, does it necessarily mean that the cancer is active again, or can the pain come and go even if the cancer is kept in check?
(I think I've read that PC pasients with bone mets sometimes feel the pain and sometimes not, even if the cancer is kept in check)
Otherwise, his health is very good, and he has no side effects. He is a very active man. The only medication he uses is Zytiga and prednisolon, no pain killers.

I agree. Probably a side effect of TMG, too much grandson.

See what scan say and go from there..

I had excruciating pain before my treatment but after six months of Lupron/casodex, I was pain free. Then a few months later I started getting back pains in my back and hip. It turned out it was the XGeva I was getting for bone protection and they moved me to Zometa. Sometimes the treatment itself causes bone pain.

I was told a good yard stick was to see if a pain is consistent in one area for a long period of time. Having pain over two days isn't much to worry about.

Best to get a scan and remove all doubt.

My bone scans are constantly clear, but after starting Prolia, I have significant pain in my hips at night. My PSA (on Lupron) is a constant <.1, so I have to blame it on exercise and Prolia.

I'll vote for grandpa back. I get that every time my grand kids visit.
and get the bone scan.

thanks, but he won't have a new scan before april 17th. Hopefully the pain will decrease in a couple of days

My wife takes meds (aromatase inhibitors) for her breast cancer that cause a great deal of large joint pain, particularly in the lower back and hips. As she will be on these indefinately, her med onc has had her on several different forms to find one with the least side effects. The current one (faslodex) has been the best. You may need to see what drug choices he has and try different ones to find the one that has the least side effects.

But he has been on Zytiga since october without side effects. Isn't it weird if he's getting side effects from it now?
