well from the top of towers 3 and 5 of the western span of the Oakland Bay Bridge  cool    what a rush! and climbing the cables is a little more strenuous than I thought! enjoy!

BTW my buddy's father-in-law was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and my buddy's dad has an enlarged prostate and elevated PSA but his recent biopsy was negative for cancer.  my buddy is 38 and he assures me he'll start annual PSA testing when he turns 40 cool .

Ed, great shots and great job climbing up to the top of the bridge! Even though I would have loved the physical challenge of climbing up the bridge cable it would have scared the you know what out of me!

great shots, scary up high like that, but another beautiful day in SF.....I sailed the Bay for 30 years, plus was a flight instructor out of Hayward for a few years.

Wow, unbelievable. I don't think you could have gotten me up there with an elevator.

Was the last picture a rusted rivet!? I know there was some faults with the bridge, but I thought they were all underground.

thank you all.  climbing the cables really isn't as scary as it looks unless you are scared of heights.  I had two weeks to think and fret about it and watch youtube videos but on the day of I was calm.  I had a great time.  I will be going back up next week to get a couple of shots I missed.  it's supposed to be 77 degrees that day cool .

RCS -- there's plenty of rust on that old bridge.  rust never sleeps cool !

great pictures of a beautiful and very cool city.

Is that you with all the tattoos? that's three things we share now.

I don't know how you did it. I took the kids to the top of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona last year and had a genuine pure bonafide anxiety attack resulting from the height and found myself my shaky legs and could barely get back down. A fear I developed late in life.

We've been to the area and I remember that bridge.  Loved the whole area, but no cable climbing for us!  Next you'll be jumping out of airplanes! smilewinkgrin

thanks guys.  can't wait to go back up.  yes, David, that's me sweating like a pig.  I almost died on the second climb because I had a heavy windbreaker on and we were running out of time so we had to pick up the pace.  when we got to the top I peeled my jacket off and it was completely soaked through with sweat..

to go up on the bridge requires a lane closure, notifying homeland security etc.  the lane must be reopened by 12:30 and you can be fined $5000 a minute if you haven't gotten off the bridge and out of the  closed lane.

Sagrada Familia is badass!  i'd love to see it some day.

these are my fave pics of yours yet. I love bridges. I was stationed on Treasure Island where the bridge crosses, and have been on it many times. How did you get permission to climb? I know I couldn't do it anymore physically, but always wanted to climb the towers like you did.

Since SF is in my backyard and we were there last night for a dinner club outing, we took the time to drive down the Embarcadero to look at the lights on the Bay Bridge. It is breathtaking and so beautiful at night, so don't forget to see the lights before you head home if you haven't already!

David -- my buddy is the engineer who designed the lighting controls.  he was kind enough to let me tag along one day.  generally they frown upon going up the cables without a partner.  so I was his "second man".

BOOGEE -- I haven't seen the lights at night yet but plan to.  I also plan to photograph the bridge at night and maybe in the morning too.  did you know the lights are angled toward the city so therefore can't be seen from angel island?

Love those pictures, I don't blame you for taking advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity. Beautiful clear day.
I used live in the East Bay for 8 years. SF is my favorite city, just don't call it Frisco! Still a big Oakland Raider fan.

thanks guys.  I carried two lenses in my backpack while one was on the camera which I wore around my neck and holstered in a case that I wore in front of me.  obviously dropping anything onto traffic 300 feet below is a very big deal cool !

showed these pics to my son tonight, I have to say, this set is my favorite of the ones you have posted so far. Seeing SF, the bridge, and Treasure Island brought some 40 year old plus memories to me, when I was an 18 year old sailor at the time.

BTW: We are going on a mediterranean cruise in Oct. and staying in Barcelona 3 days before boarding the ship.

We are planning on going to the Gaudi Cathederal (Sagrada Familia) and all the sights that will allow us for 3 days.
