trying to fully understand what you wrote. in your narrative, you mentioned robotic surgery, but in the stats below, it says "open rp". which one was it?

so you are saying that he had surgery 2 weeks ago, and was able to have sex, basically in the "normal" way, with just a little piece of Viagra? that would be remarkable, that soon out of any kind of prostate surgery.

I had open surgery myself, and never experienced any ED after, so it can and does happen to a rare few. I was on the catheter for 63 days after surgery, but it was probably a good month, hard to remember after 4 1/2 years, before I felt well enough surgically to attempt anything, but when I felt ready, all systems work.

Two weeks after surgery would be pretty amazing to say the least. Most surgeons wouldn't even want to a patient to attempt sex at all that soon, due to the complexity of the surgery.

Good luck ahead, he would be really off to a fast start in his recovery. You also said the catheter just came out, is he having any incontinence issues minus the catheter?

for most men some incontinence is to be expected and is normal, and for many they report better urination ability. however, there is a lot of swelling post surgery, which is also normal.

so was it robotic surgery or open? helps to understand what he is experiencing.

You are one lucky girl and, of course, he is also very lucky. I've heard quite a few people say their sexual ability returned within a week or two -- one guy posted once about how he developed an erection when the catheter was STILL in him, something he said was a blessing AND curse.

It usually takes at least a few months for erections to resume and the Viagra or Cialis is generally taken every day for the first 90 days simply to increase the blood flow to the surgical site to promote overall healing. On the other hand, trying to have sex is supposed to be okay 2-3 weeks from surgery, so he should be okay from that.

As for the climax, yes it is often reported to be MORE intense than before the surgery -- perhaps a trade off for the loss of ejaculation.

Other people must wait for years to regain full erections. I am 1 1/2 years post-da Vinci and still have not had a full erection. But things seem to be improving and I'm hoping that one day everything will just suddenly "bloom" for me. On the other hand, my surgeon said they will NOT reach the level of whatever they were prior to the surgery. And, since I had a very significant case of BPH, they were usually not all that great. On the other hand, my own orgasms ARE very intense (meaning they feel just as good if not better than before) and I often DO have an ejaculate volume even without a prostate.

So I don't know what to expect, except that one guy posted that he was totally flaccid and had given up -- and suddenly the erections returned out of nowhere ..... 3 years, 9 months after surgery!

So your husband is very lucky and hopefully this also means you can forget about that extra employment you were worried about. At least it doesn't look like it would take almost 4 years, so it looks like you truly ARE a genius! LOL

July 2011 local PSA lab reading 6.41 (from 4.1 in 2009). Mayo Clinic PSA Sept. 2011 was 5.7.
Local urologist DRE revealed significant BPH, but no lumps.
PCa Dx Aug. 2011 at age of 61.
Biopsy revealed adenocarcinoma in 3 of 20 cores (one 5%, two 20%). T2C.
Gleason score 3+3=6.
CT of abdomen, bone scan both negative.
DaVinci prostatectomy 11/1/11 at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN), nerve sparing, age 62.
My surgeon was Dr. Matthew Tollefson, who I highly recommend.
Final pathology shows tumor confined to prostate.
5 lymph nodes, seminal vesicles, extraprostatic soft tissue all negative.
1.0 x 0.6 x 0.6 cm mass involving right posterior inferior,
right posterior apex & left mid posterior prostate.
Right posterior apex margin involved by tumor over a 0.2 cm length, doctor says this is insignificant.
Prostate 98.3 grams, tumor 2 grams. Prostate size 5.0 x 4.7 x 4.5 cm.
Abdominal drain removed the morning after surgery.
Catheter out in 7 days. No incontinence, occasional minor dripping.
Post-op exams 2/13/12, 9/10/12, PSA <0.1. PSA tests now annual.
Semi-firm erections now happening 14 months post-op & slowly getting a bit stronger.

Btw. When I talked to PA she said Intercourse was ok he just could not be on top as it would be too strenuous. Did not attempt intercourse...used other ways:) Hopefully I did not jenks our love life now for being so thrilled about his progress. Tomorrow is two weeks post surg. Even having a baby we had to wait six weeks. Clint heard the PA give the ok as I had the phone on speaker or I probably would have tried to get away with more time!

Ha ha...I did see that movie. New way to have safe sex...less std's n pregnancies but can't be as much fun. Just think if we could fast forward 30 years from now...hopefully NO more pc!!

Wow. But take it gently, lots of healing still going on inside.
Incontinence will take a while. Pads may be needed for ages yet.

I'm one of the people that got an erection when the cath was in. It was terrific to know that the system was still functioning, indeed it happened twice that first week after surgery, but it sure felt unpleasant, uncomfortable, painful etc as it pulled on the cath and the cath pulled on it and it also made things point in the opposite way required fro gravity to make the pee flow into the bag. I very quickly had to do stuff like think about my tax bills ect to make it go away. Squeezing the glans between finger and thumb can also make an erection go away but that too was not much fun with the general tenderness in the equipment.

Anyway, glad you look like you both haev a bit less to worry about.

DGV - sorry, I took the davinci part literally, that's why it confused me.

I was the one that Highlander spoke of. I was having full errections while still on the catheter, and twice, as an experiment, had 2 different orgasm experiences. It was kind of weird and creepy, and having a full size errections with the catheter in place kind of hurt to some degree, and I was afraid that I may end up hurting myself, or what if I had to go to the hospital like that! Would not recommend anyone else to experiment that way, even if you could.

And I agree with some others, the orgasms I have had since surgery, are so much better. Way more intense and probably last 4-6 times longer, no complaint from this guy. And with no "mess" to deal with, one can be in more creative situations.

- going out for walks will help your husband in his recovery and help with his control of his bladder - doing kegel exercises can help too - also - make sure he is changing his pad when needed - so he does not end up with a soggy pecker ( sorta looks like a white blister on penis head) - use zinc oxide - baby rash cream to help heal it -
-do remember he has been through major surgery and it does take time to heal - including having body bits talk to each other - it can take 14-16 weeks to start regaining control of bladder - some are dry right away - others can take a while ... wishing all the best,

Hey, I forgot to address this in my original reply to you. Have you ever purchased one of those pill cutters from CVS or Walgreens? Essentially it is just a razor blade embedded in a plastic frame in which you place a pill. Then you simply bring the lid (containing the blade) down and it slices the pill in half, quarters, etc.

Only costs a couple bucks, so you might check one out & see if that helps.

In the meantime, I'm honored to offer advice to a genius. LOL

THey have things called a "pill splitter" that has a sharp blade and a plastic mechanism to hold the pill. Cutting it in quarters would be nearly impossible any other way.

I'm jealous!!!
