I am almost 6 months post treatment and I have had one day free from urinating

and bowel movement pain (That day was Good Friday) how's that for irony!

Pyridium seems to make it worse and I've tried the baking soda solution and

twice a day Flomax. Doctor said "All I can tell you is this pain won't last forever"

turn I truly am losing my mind. Please tell me there is light at the end of the tunnel.....

 

Age 51, PC diagnosed 7/2012 at age 50
Stage: T2c, Gleason: 9 , 9 of 12 cores positive
Bone, CAT scans negative

Treatment: brachytherapy (HDR), 8/2012 + (Lupron every 3 months)

external beam radiation 28 treatments average treatment time 40 minutes

not counting prep time.


PSA: 7/2012, At time of diagnosis -- 19.75
1/2013 - 0.04
New PSA to be done 4/25/2013

Side effects during external beam radiation:

Minor surface irritations, Burning during bowel movements and

urination, and the typical side effects of the Lupron (feeling like

my wife always says she feels) should have listend!<!-- Edit -->

It's been awhile and I may have experienced some of what you have, but not to that extreme. I still get some burning sensation during(mostly just before) urination, but no bowel movement burning.

Jeffro,

Have you talked to your doctor about the bowel problem? It sounds like hemorrhoids to me (they are a common side effect of external beam radiation) and your doctor can give you some suppositories that will help a lot.

As for your urinary discomfort, it is most likely radiation cystitis which is also fairly common and, like you doctor says, does usually go away eventually -- and it can be treated if it lingers.

I found that Rapaflo worked much better than Flomax. Your Uro might have samples you can try -- never hurts to ask. Daily Aleve might help too.

My proctologist recommends Canasa (mesalamine) as an anti-inflammatory for the bowels. There is also an Anusol with cortisone suppository, but I don't like taking cortisone inside if I can avoid it.

It's common to have those symptoms. They typically disappear eventually -- never soon enough, though. You had a lot of radiation and the ADT seems to make it worse. If you have copious bleeding from the bowels (not just from hemorrhoids) or find that you can no longer pee, go to the Emergency Room immediately.

I have had both symptoms that started 6-9 months after radiation for me.

My gastroenterologist recommends Metamucil or Citracel 2-3 times a day with 8 glasses of water a day.  I would also add a stool softener.  The purpose is to soften the stools enough to decrease the pain and prevent bleeding.

Suppositories did not help me much.  I did try Carafate suspension (sucralfate) given by rectal enema.  It helped but was a hassle for me so I quit doing it.

I agree with Tall Allen on prolonged use of hydrocortisone given by suppository.  Enough is absorbed to have systemic side effects.  You could try it short tern 7-14 days to see if it helps if you are very uncomfortable. 

Really bad cases of radiation cystitis or proctitis can be treated by hyperbaric oxygen.  The treatment is lengthy and sometimes not covered by insurance.  There are several members here that have had this treatment with success. 

Good luck.  I believe, in time, this will pass for both of us and we will be ok.
