I seem to be starting a lot of threads today, but...

After reading a few threads regarding firing doctors and making medical decisions, I do get the feeling that we have many analytical types here on HW.

I know I am a mathematician and tend to research, think quantify, and make decisions. Many of you do the same.

That's just an observation. Also, it may be that many who participate in a forum such as this are partial to computers and many of those folks tend to be logical/analytical.

So, that's my observation.

Any comments?

I would tend to think that those would would reach out and become active on a site like this would be analytical and curious types. A working knowledge of how to research on the Internet (and know reliable vs questionable sites) is a huge plus in this day and age, and a God send for those of us who may be "stats" junkies. I think as time goes by, more and more (by that I mean younger and more internet savy) guys will be becoming better informed and more analytical. It can only help in my opinion.

I was constipated once and worked it out wth a slide rule. Does that count?

Todd, I sure hope you used plenty of Vaseline before inserting the slide rule.

did you hear about the constipated accountant? He worked it out with a pencil...

I tend to be the analytical type. I analyze, re-analyze, stress over the correctness and quality of my analysis, try to get others to help with the primary and secondary analysis before send the the whole thing off for review by and outside expert.

but that's just me.

I am not analytical and can give you five reasons to prove it.....oops!!

That is what a former co-worker once said in response to being labelled analytical. He wanted to be thought of more in the socially expressive group, not in the geeky group.

Yes, there is a lot of critical thinking by many on this board, but I don't know how that compares with others.

Actually, I do remember slide rules, but I only used one for a few months.

It works better with an analog device. Hope you used a analgesic beforehand.

My computer days go back to my being in the army and running Univac 1005s and more often the NCR 500. Talk about primitive.... But good job to have in the Army back in 1969-71

Then a more recent credential being one of the newsgroups active MP3 pirates back in the mid 1990s. In fact if you enter my abbreviated user name from the pirate groups today many ripped mp3s will still turn up with it in the comments on the tags. I also had 20+ email addys back then that later when I was banned here for awhile I could always pull out another email addy to get around my ban. Until they banned that name and address. Then I just use another. I'd guess Tony may remember that. But that was the old wild Ziggy not the civilized one in front of you today.

Was using a slide rule in the mid 70's when I was working as a mechanical draftsman, still have my original one, the case, instructions, and box. When I show it young guys, they stare in amazement, but clueless how to use one.

good old binary, jerry, been a while. when I started with computer programming, it was in Assembler, one step away from binary

- love Jerry's comments ( binary code) - there were no gaps so on my screen he actually altered the width of his posting compared to others - does that make me analytical or OCD or anal or artistic ( the change in the visual field) or ...

Computers, logical & analytical--nope! Had "punch cards" for unit load plans in the army--planes probably would have crashed without good load masters. Wilds of West Texas--Halliburton tables and $ 80 Sharp simple caculator--forgot my multiplication tables. A "FAX" machine to send my daily reports to Houston--big as a travel trunk! Hp41 calculator to drill "directional/slant" well under Lake JBThomas--What a hoot! Eastman Whip stock consultants had to put their slide rules and TI calculators away and use HP41's so our reports jived.
Later years--Had a computer on my desk and coworkers normally set it up..No research requirements.
Currently--Wife has computer/printer/ etc that I rarely use. I am a "guest" and not administrator. Use books for any research and still write my letters
By hand...OLD SCHOOL!! It took Casey 60 seconds to find a reference which I never did find--So what!! I'm comfortable where I'm at..

Yeah, I had a K&E as well.  This was somewhat oddball as most of my classmates had Post slide rules.  I only used mine about 7-8 years.  Ditched it as soon as electronic calculators were introduced.  I've often said my college beer consumption would have increased multifold if I could have just had an HP35 [grin].

My physician is John Sylvestor. John Blasko, Peter Grimm and John founded the Prostate Cancer Center of Seattle. Dr. Sylvestor told me that early in their practice, they treated a large number of engineers from Boeing located 25 miles north of Seattle. They would come to the Center with briefcases full of articles challenging the physicians to validate their approaches to treatment. Remember, brachytherapy in the 80's and 90's was considered a poor substitute to surgery to treat prostate cancer. He and his partners believe that those engineers made them better physicians. If physicians of this caliber appreciate informed patients, that says something to me.
I have often found that physicians with blustering egos that dismiss anything but their own opinions, are below average physicians. Member beware. Sylvestor and I have traded articles. He loves to do this.
We have a group of analytical men that would resemble the above engineers. Like the engineers, they find and analyze "cutting-edge" literature and present it to us. Oftentimes, it becomes apparent that many of our new members are receiving poor advice from their local physicians. If the standards of care cited in the literature are significantly different than what a local physician is presenting to one of our members, it does not take a doctor to question those recommendations. Men that educate themselves and others to gain an advantage over this awful disease are not playing doctors. Unfortunately, they often get accused of doing so by other members on this forum. IMHO, it is my body, and it is in my best interest to protect myself for my loved ones. Honestly, I could care less if I bruise a physician's ego by asking him to validate his/her treatment.

I had the pleasure (privilege) of contributing to the development of the HP 35 calculator, which made my K & E slide rule obsolete.

Amazing, isn't it? The little PC each of us now has on his or her desk probably has more computing power than a building full of main frames back in the 1960s!

What will it be like in just a few years? Mainframes the size of postage stamps?!!??

One other thing re the conversation about slide rules. In the newsreel footage covering the first moon landing in 1969, there is a quick sequence showing one of the technicians at the space center sitting at a console and doing a calculation using a slide rule! You mean to tell me we sent astronauts to the moon and brought them back using slide rules??!!??
