I applaud the decision of the US Supreme Court on their finding that human genes cannot be patented. This means that research on the causes (and combating them) of diseases which have a genetic basis will no longer be hamstrung by researchers having to pay a patent holder to simply work on the gene. There is an appeal case currently running in Australia challenging the right to a company (corporation) holding rights over the BRCA1 breast cancer gene (earlier upheld) and I am hoping this US decision may influence the local High Court judges.
