Just got a call from Dr. Lam's office. I've had a battery of blood tests.

My PSA is great. It declined further to 0.03.

But I now have elevated liver enzymes. This is not good.

It is probably due to the Casodex.

She called to ask me some questions (no, I don't drink and I have not been taking tylenol or certain other medications).

Dr. Lam will be calling me back. I suspet he will tell me to stop the Casodex for now until I see him on 8/5 when they will do a retest.

Crap. So, has anyone else experienced this?

Not me. But it can be the Casodex or the Lupron.

But I like your PSA score. Perhaps you might be headed for a vacation anyway?

I am starting a vacation... we leave for Vegas on Wednesday.

But this puts a damper on things.

Will be seeing Lam on Monday.

Mel,

I am on ADT2. My enzyme levels have been normal the whole way. They way I understand it, Casodex is the concern with regard to liver irritation. Dr. Lam has me check liver enzymes every 3 months.

He could just have your proceed with Lupron only.

Would another anti-androgen possibly help? Bicalutamide isn't the only one.

I just had a check of liver functions too, having been on Lupron 3 months and Casodex 1 month. So far, so good, but my MO is definitely interested in watching it.

Both ALT and AST are quite a bit higher than the normal range

Mel - sorry to hear that - did you ever have Hepatitis as a kid or adult - that combined with other medication can sometimes cause changes to liver enzyme levels/
I had severe hepatitis A as a child and still monitor my liver especially since I take pariet for acid reflux and lipitor for cholesterol which can both elevate enzyme levels.

I am SO BUMMED OUT. I was so worried about the PSA, and that cooperated.

Sorry, my liver issue is going on vacation with me, since I will be seeing Dr. Lam on Monday (part of my vacation!).

My enzymes fluctuated as well while on HT.

If you want I will dig up the exact numbers and compare if you'd like.

Mel -- as you recall after Lupron my liver numbers were up and my hepatologist had talked me into a year of interferon treatments.  he said because I had hep c that I would need to be treated. my viral load came back <5 and I a subsequent biopst showed that my body has somehow cleared the hepatitis C and B virus!

so yeah I know what you are talking about.  my last enzyme test came back normal.

Congratulations on your "low" PSA score; now we are tied!! Since you have "bad" knees, I hope that you have thrown your glucosamine chondroitin supplement out.
It was prescribed for my osteoarthritis in 1 knee (now both are bad)..Anyway, the glucosamine can have effects on your liver. A PCP prescribed it and never said to stop. Only supplement I am taking is vit d3 now and I eat chicken now instead of fish--lol.
I think that you are doing great and as our lupron "poster boy" you can live without casodex if you have to--nasty stuff!! I wish you well professor and don't donate too much $$ to lower Tony's taxes.
