Impromptu plan to take kids, wife and mother in law on a road trip to Washington DC to watch Rome play soccer against Chelsea at RFK Saturday night and then to FINALLY see The Lincoln Memorial on Sunday.

I've been waiting years to see that. I'll have about 2 hours for sightseeing on Saturday before game and 6 hours Sunday before heading home. My hotel is very central, says 1 block from White House. Any advice on what is close and possible to cram in (not museums) in that short time knowing that I will be walking to Lincoln Memorial would be much appreciated. Have interest in the Vietnam Memorial but no idea wher eit is in relation to hotel and Lincoln Memorial.

Best thing about entire trip is that Congress isn't in session.

Lincoln Memorial is very close to the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial. I think the Lincoln Memorial is best done at night when it's all lit up and very, very powerful. Even your kids will be amazed. Great view then of the Washington Monument in the reflecting pool. Not sure if the evening is possible...if not you could easily pair that with the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial for the 2-hour part of your sightseeing.

I highly recommend the WWII memorial. Not only the physical site itself, but almost always busloads of aging veterans in an emotional visit to their long overdue monument. A lot of them are on "Honor Flights" from all over the nation, many in wheelchairs. It's really worth the visit and also within walking distance.  When we went there, I was privilege to meet former Senator Bob Dole.  When I shook his hand, I told him that I was one year out from my DaVinci surgery, and he, a prostate cancer survivor himself, was immediately interested and concerned.  At that time, he was there nearly every day, they told me, as was his wife.

David, if you have the time, check out The Capitol...the Rotunda is absolutely magnificent.

Be prepared for heat and humidity, and NYC-type prices for eating out, etc.

Can't believe how small and unassuming the White House looks. Not too many tourists either. Bunch of guys outside preaching the end if the world. Off to game at RFK now.

Hope you took in the Viet-Nam Wall. I know you were too young for it, but it means a lot to a lot of us Nam vets here. Would love to see it again.

Good.

My grandkids went to DC for the first time this summer with their parents, they loved the museums mostly and the Lincoln Memorial,
they didn't realize how huge the statute of Lincoln really is. Yes, from the outside, the White House isn't' overly impressive, the Biltmore
Mansion in Asheville does a better job of wealth and splendor, lol.

Awesome, Ww2 and Vietnam memorials done with taste and class. Lincoln memorial fantastic, too bad for the scaffolding. Now the 5 hour drive north
