Gotta share this for some of the guys whom enjoy cars from various era's and especially the fire breathing dragons of the 60's-'70 among the most memorable testosterone rides on the planet, especially back then. This annual huge Detroit suburb event is likely the biggest autorama of driving hot cars down the road for viewing, found anywhere. Back in the 60's especially, kids racing their machines on Woodward Ave. and cruising the various Drive-In's was nostalgia on steroids. I had fond memories of such and had friends with some wicked machines too. I remember gasoline at .20 (20-cents a gallon back then) gas wars drove prices down, and you could drive that dragon all night pretty cheap. Fumes filled the air and cruising was an art form.
This event has everything with a motor on it, driving down the road, some are probably illegal but they let it pass for one day. I once did a Dodge Caravan converted into a convertible-pickup truck version and for added laughs put swimming fins on the back near the taillights (aka 'fins' like late 1950's), and a squirrel cage furnace blower (painted gold) on the hood for a 'bad axe' motor look (more laughs). Another time did a Geo Metro conv't., made ground effects, spoiler, and had 1.0 on the fender (3 cylinder motor LOL), had a huge skate key out the back trunk to look like a wind up car and written on the doors 'Pace Car'.....got more laughs too.
Today's Cruise was cool, one million people attending this event (thus huge). I loved the guy play Humongous and driving his homemade Road Warrior bizzare vehicle, even had two dumby bodies on the front kind of like from the movie with Mel Gibson version. Another laugh was the American Motors Gremlin with big block chevy 427 and built in it, under the hood is good.
Nice Vette's everywhere and all years presented, liked the 1966 conv't. with original 425 h.p. and sales build sheet cost only $4,808 back in the day. Some of those T-birds from 1955-57 conv'ts. also cost around $4,300+ saw a build sheet. One could literally O.D. on hot cars here after a few hours of viewing. You might be able to go online and find some photos of this event. I will look and post if I find a good link. Anyway I got free testosterone on this gig today.
