Of course, breast cancer is a different animal than prostate cancer but as Purgatory as often said, a cancer cell is a cancer cell. Some may say that my neighbor jumped the gun and went through a horrific surgery for something that technically wasn't yet cancer. But, frankly, if I were in her shoes, I would have done the same exact thing.
IIRC, Brangelina did the same thing based upon a blood test, but she does have a strong family history as well. She's a "very brave woman" according to the media. I'm not minimizing that, but I certainly don't like the media circus. It's her choice, but it raises awareness and stimulates discussion, some good, some bad.
My wife works as an RN in pre-admission testing and she interviews women who are having prophy mastectomies due to positive family history. It's not an epidemic, but it's not that uncommon, either.
A man in London recently had an RP due to a positive blood test for the gene.
www.medscape.com/viewarticle/804423 IMO, this can tend to create more confusion if enough information isn't shared through education.
davidg, I fixed that Wa-Po link. It's worth a read.
