Climbing the new eastern span of the bay bridge (OT pictures)......

the bay bridges are all closed for five days.  when the closure ends on September 3rd the old cantilever section of the bay bridge, which was damaged during the 1987 loma prieta earthquake, will be replaced by the controversial, hi-tech span. 

the day before the closure we were allowed to climbed the new tower (there's only one) via a system of steel ladders.  it was a tough climb but worth it.  there was a lone CHP cruiser parked near the tower but other than that we owned the joint when we made the late night climb, stopping at the various levels to snap a few pics.

Thanks for sharing the pictures! That's as close as I'll ever get to being where you were. I don't even drive over the bridge to the city any longer because parking is a bear and too expensive. I take BART now but I do miss that view of the city skyline while driving in. I may do one more drive in someday just to see what it looks like from the new section of the bridge.

thank you everyone.  I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to climb these bridges.  this has been a great year for me after a couple of years that were nightmarish, and then there's the upcoming uro visit .

Fantastic pics as usual. I couldn't overcome my fear of heights, however.

Just watched an interview on CBS Sunday News with photographer Joe Blum (sp) and his photos of that bridge. Very interesting.
