I just switched over to a high deductible plan and was quite surprised to find out that my 90 day supply of avodart, .5mg soft gel, will be costing me $400. Doesn't matter if I go through CVS or Express scripts mail order (a little cheaper, but not much). Does anyone know of a cheaper source? Thanks, BB

Try Costco, before my RALP I bought my Viagra there and they were 30% cheaper than Walgreens or CVS.

I believe Costco will ship, and you can order and check prices online.

 

I am doing great looking forward to our GFMPH cruise in December and then semi retirement next year and moving back to Texas to be close to family.

Same thing happen to me! Looking into a generic or possible switch to Proscar.

An overseas pharmacy or switching to Finasteride might be the solution..Are you treating BPH?

My uro just put me on Avodart three times a week. Said the generic is cheaper but that it has to be taken daily so the cost ends up beina about the same.

But the directions on the sample box of Avodart says to take daily. Any info on this before I call my uro to clarify?

Thanks for all the comments. Terry, I will definitely check out the Costco website. Wampus, is Dr Lam Ok with a switch from Avodart to Poscar? Is it just as effective? Fairwind, I am not treating BPH, I am on a PSA arrest program after 12 months of ADT3, 2 + years and running.

Wildcat, interesting that you Dr has you on avodart 3 times a week. My Dr has me on a daily does of .5mg. Are you taking a larger does? Sounds like a worthwhile question to put to him.

Yeah, it's the .5mg. When he was explaining the options, he said Avodart was more expensive, but that the generic had to be taken every day. Making the cost be similar. But when I saw the instructions on the sample box and the .5mg on the box and the prescription, it got me confused. I've got a call in to the office and waiting for return call.

Sometimes doctors will give patients different directions than what they write on the scrip to save the patient money. If the prescription reads "daily" and the patient takes the drug three times a week then a 'one-month supply' will last for 70 days. This is similar to a doctor prescribing twice the dose of an expensive ED drug, knowing that the patient will cut the pills in half. In both cases the drug has to be safe if taken as described on the scrip AND safe to take at the lower dose that reduces the expense.

The generic is finasteride which I took for many years after my Rx denied avodart. I assume you're taking for BPH?
Please know that it reduces your PSA by about half and on theory reduces onset of prostate cancer but cancer is frequently more serious when it occurs. So watch your PSA test results and get a biopsy if it increases. A 2 is really a 4 etc.

BB' s not using it for BPH. Some use Avodart as a maintenance drug while on intermittent hormone therapy.

What you say about it reducing psa is true before any treatment for PC, but I don't think that it is necessarily true for those that use the drug after surgery.

I would check with urologist about whether finasteride reduces PSA count after surgery.

No finasteride is generic Proscar. Very similar to avodart whose generic name is dutasteride. The last I heard generic avodart is not available at least in the US. While finasteride, generic Proscar is available and cheap

Bob, I am taking Avodart as a part of a treament program recommended by my medical oncologist with the objective of delaying a return of PSA/Cancer growth post HT. So far so good. Question is - is Poscar/finasteride as effective as Avodart? Interesting that dutasteride is not avaiable in the US, is that because it would inhibit the sales of the more expensive avodart? I have e-mailed my doctor with the Poscar/Avodart question. I will post the response.

It is the same thing and denying avodart and recommending generic proscar ( finasteride) is a common insurance practice. With my insurance pretreatment they were fine with avodart. Then after they weren't and I took finasteride for a short time. Later I was approved for avodart but by then I had stopped taking it. It's all about $ for there is an enzyme difference between Avodart and Proscar.
