My dad started Zytiga in mid August after getting treated with Provenge as a baseline which ended in July. His PSA rose while on Provenge and was at 60 when he started Zytiga. His blood work was checked in early September and PSA dropped to 20. At the time of that doctor's appointment in September, he was given a shot of Lupron (his last Lupron shot before that was in May prior to starting Provenge. At that time in May, his PSA started jumping from 16 and continued up while on Provenge to 60 at the end of July/early August. He just went for a check-up with his oncologist last week and his blood work showed a PSA result of 30. He has seemed to tolerate Zytiga very well and was feeling a lot better. Only obvious issue is some achiness/mild back pain in his mid back area but he has been managing this with hydrocodone or trying to take Tylenol. The back pain was quite pronounced as I had shared before after his last Provenge treatment. It took about
two months but has gradually gotten better - we don't know if it was from Provenge. He does have osteoporosis and had been on hormone therapy over the years with Casodex and Lupron.
My mother and I were very disappointed to learn about the PSA rise with Zytiga just barely two months into taking it. I thought I had come across something that suggested there could be a hormone surge after a Lupron shot which could result in an increased PSA result. Does anyone have any information on this?
His oncologist posted the result and they only have emailed about it. I am wondering if they should do another set of bloodwork just to confirm the numbers did go up. Looking for more insight. Doctor told him to continue on Zytiga for now but should look into other drugs. He has a doctor at Northwestern and also MD Anderson. In process of setting up visit to MD Anderson to have new scans run down there - hasn't had any since Provenge and determine course of action.
Anyone experience anything similar?
