Off the Lupron Today-Yippee!!!

I have now reached a personal milestone in my battle with PCa. My normal 3-month Lupron shot was to happen today and I choose to stop it after 21 months. So I just had my blood drawn for PSA and testosterone to set the baseline going forward. It’s time for me to see how well the docs did in treating me for a “cure” with IMRT and ADT. I will say my radiation oncologist wanted me on the Lupron for 40 months, but at this point in my life, quality of life is way more important than a long life. I’m now going down the path of hopefully having my T recover and maintaining an undetectable PSA……

Good luck. I am due for my 6th 3-month shot (of a total of 8) later this month. I have to admit to being tempted to stop one shot short which would make 21 months instead of 24. That still gives me six months to make up my mind. Several studies have failed to find a difference between 18 months and 36 so, according to that theory, your 21 months should have most of the cancer-killing goodness of your full 36.

I cannot count how many times I have mentally threatened to stop early. I have challenged doctors, etc. However, I decided to doggedly press on to the finish to get to a clean closure of my treatment plan such that between my doctors and I we can all say we executed the plan 100%. It has been tough but in retrospect I am glad I stuck it out. Of course, this is easier for me to say now that I see the finish line up ahead. I just hope it really is the finish for good and there is no recurrence in my future.

I stopped Avodart today after 4 days short of 18 months. I have done everything I have been told to do to defeat this beast. For next 6 months I just want to enjoy myself after an almost )
2 year old fight. Congrats to you!

I want to thank all my fellow brothers in this fight for responding with words of congratulations and encouragement. To have your support is very meaniful at this time. This was a very personal decision for me and I want to be sure that everyone understands that. To be clear, I am in no way recommending this to anyone else. You have to do what you have to do.

For those of you who continue the brave path of full ADT treatment duration, you should be extremely proud of your chosen path. My prayers for you will always be there!
