I had
open RP at Hopkins a little over two years ago. I have no side-effects other than preferring to take half of a viagra before sex. I could probably do without, and I do sometimes, but it's fool proof with it. That said, my doc offered robotic, but said he would prefer doing it the
open way. I had no objection as I had already read that Hopkins still had a preference at this time for
open RP. Plus, at barely 42, it was still the "recommended" method for men at my young age. I have a 5 inch scar below my navel, but nothing else to remind of the cancer. My PSA has been .01 since my first test and I remained a G6 with my post surgical pathology.
I would have likely opted for
open anyway. I have to admit being skeptical of all the heralding surrounding robotic. I follow in my father's footsteps of trusting nothing in the first few model years.
There was nearly a generation of
open nerve sparing surgeries at Hopkins before I got there... seemed like a no-brainer to me.
