Decision Made: Surgery, Dr. Tewari, 1/16

Well, by preponderance of the evidence my prostate has been found guilty of having cancer and subject to a penalty of removal by surgery.

After having read countless articles, studies, forum posts; talked to numerous doctors and, most importantly, talked with family and friends I have made the decision to have surgery.

The decision was not made lightly, nor was there much emotion behind it... more of a numbers game with surgery giving me a slight edge IMHO. And as someone who loves to gamble, a slight edge can pay off over time.

Plan is to fly up to NYC on the Sunday before, have a MRI on Monday, meet with Dr. Tewari on Tuesday and surgery on Thursday. Will stay up there until the catheter comes out then fly home.

I had narrowed my potential surgeons down to three (Tewari, Burnett, Patel) and chose Tewari because he was just plain approachable and made me feel like I was his only patient... the same goes for his staff.

Anyway... decision done... now on to the holidays and a two week vacation in NYC!

The decision can be the hardest part. Good work on getting that done.

The rest will be easy.

Congrats on making the decision, Mikla. If I had decided to go with surgery, Tewari would have been my first choice. I hope he will be able to use his low nerve torsion technique in your case, and you get a Trifecta.

Yes, congratulations are in order in having made "the decision". As you can see from my sig, I am
quite satisfied with Tewari. I too flew in from Florida and stayed two weeks. Now relax, knowing that you have made a decision you can comfortably embrace and "wrap your head around". Best wishes!

Congrats on making "the decision". I was quite relieved when I made my choice and a date was set for the surgery.

 Congratulations on making your decision, for me I think it was the hardest part. Like you I took a few months reading books , literature and researching online and came to the same decision. It could not have worked out any better so far. good-luck and keep us posted.

The hardest part of dealing with prostate cancer is in making the correct surgical decision for yourself. I too researched the subject and for me personally, I decided to go robotic.

Now since you have the hardest part behind you, the easy part is getting the darn thing out and recuperating from surgery.

Congrats on making the decision!

Choosing Tewari was the smartest thing I did. The second smartest thing I did was to read Dr. Mulhall's book (link below) on ED after Prostate Cancer. I only wish I had read it before surgery instead of 4 months after.

I had my surgery done by Dr. Tewari 3 years ago (Jan. 5, 11 to be exact). He was at Cornell at that time. Considering your age, I believe you made the best decision decide on Dr. Tewari.

My surgery was a difficult one, I had EPE, but Dr. T was successful in preserving the nerves. I had a bad path report so had adjuvant hormone therapy and radiation therapy the following year.

Now, 3 years after surgery, I have a good sex life even without meds.

So don't worry, you'll be fine, you are in good hands.

Thanks all for the support and reassuring words! I am actually looking forward to this. Not only because of the surgery to remove PCa, but my wife and I are going to make a little vacation out of it. So now it is a vacation with a "little" side trip to the hospital.
